Here is my post on that 2006 thread.

I also posted this on that thread, it is easy to see why I saw him a fascinating crazy cannibal wild man.

“”Here is Idi Amin Dada’s full title.
Popular history recalls Amin’s declared title to be: “His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea, and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular.”

Look at that! Consistent for 18 years... lol

Highlighting the qualities of a crazy man always comes with the risk of being condemned for mentioning them. Regardless, I regret you never got around to sending that letter. That would have been an interesting historical event.

The older guys will remember that Africa, Reagan, mercenaries, Jonas Savimbi, Amin, South Africa, Rhodesia, Communism, were all very topical and of much African conversation during the Reagan years.

I don’t have a recollection of those events.

My political awareness began listening to Bob Grant in the mid 80s — otherwise, I had no insights as I was a busy young man preoccupied with keeping my business afloat. Unfortunately the conservative record of choice didn’t begin until 1997. I suppose I’m in a similar situation now still obliged to work most of the time, but now armed with the political insights here at FR.

The 80s were hot, hot , hot, Reagan was everywhere and pushing the Russians on everything, and there was a lot of covert operations and Americans and some Europeans serving as mercenaries against the communists and further harassing the Russians, the tension was incredible for those paying attention and a lot of that was being reflected in American and even European societies, and it was mixed with the extraordinary American patriotism and enthusiasm, even people who didn’t know the real happenings could sense the global activity and they knew that Reagan, was confronting the evil empire and that we were surviving it, and then as the years passed and the danger reduced, winning it.

I certainly remember the Reagan years, but didn’t have a comprehensive understanding of the geopolitical matters. I was also well aware of the Iran hostage crisis that Reagan brought to a rapid close. The news related to Russia seemed surreal as it was an unexpected realization of what we learned in history class. And I recall how the Left in Hollywood and Music hated Reagan which was a rude awakening — very disappointing to see how these once “vaunted” entertainment industries were blatantly infecting public discourse and opinions. Agreed that Reagan secured the future of the World for at least a few decades.

What about the Democrats that successfully overthrew the elected President and his Candidacy for President of the Peoples Democratic Republic of America?

Are they to be arrested?

The very existence of Muh Democracy is at stake.

The movie Red Dawn was banned in parts of West Germany, hated by the American media and the Russians had some ability to block or influence some negative Hollywood and television portrayals, people forget how intense it was between the left elites and the Reagan loving, America loving public.

Same thing today with Quaid’s ‘Reagan’ film. The Rotten critics hates it, but the viewers love it.

China also took advantage by making them look like the “good guys” back then, and in Red Dawn.

No question that was their strategy to take advantage of the Anti-Soviet mentality of the time, to appear to be our friend.
