Custer was responsible for the actions of his entire command, not just the white guys wearing blue. If he could not control his scouts, he needed to get rid of them and either get more reliable men or use his own Cavalry as it was designed for scouting.

After you went over a laundry list of reasons Custer should have had 5 stars, you decide to throw in a personal jab which negates your whole paragraph. Your hero finished last in his class at West Point, was incorrectly promoted to BG and lost that rank as soon as the War Department could get it corrected. And had I lived in the times of these struggles, I would not have worn blue. However I did wear blue from the 70s to the 90s, made Field Grade officer rank in the US Army and wonder about your military experience outside some classroom.

Before Custer attacked at the Washita he separated his Osage scouts from his command as he feared them being shot by his own men as in such a fight you could not tell one tribe from another.

The Cheyenne women and kids fled the camp, unfortunately it was in the direction where the Osages were. There was no love between them and the Osages began to “pay back” for attacks on their tribe in the past.

So? He still thrashed the Confederates and made a name for himself. That is how promotions were given in the past get “your name mentioned in dispatches.”

With the terrain gattling guns would have been a problem to haul. Now a Tank...TWILIGHT ZONE...The 7th Is Made Up of Phantoms.

Last in class was meaningless. He was a Brevet. And was naturally demoted when the Army wound down after the war. George McClelland was second in his class. US Grant was 21 out of 39. MacArthur was first in his class and was a dud except for his postwar service in occupation Japan.
And don’t worry Mr. Field Grade Zero, none of your business, but Marines, 0311, 0321, combat (not the best, not the worst)

And you still aren’t fit to shine Custer’s boots. Go away ring knocker.
