“The idea of small mobile long range air defense (offense) system”

FtrPilot expressed interest in that, earlier in the war. He wanted to know if PATRIOT launchers could be forward deployed, far from their radars, for just such an ambush (without exposing the radar to additional threat).

We will have to see what can be done in practice, but it is a good idea.

Massive fire yesterday in the Port of Novorossiysk. No videos of what happened yet, but FIRMS fire map shows the fire was large. Looks like multiple warehouses were burning.

“Ukrainian forces successfully struck the Russian NIP-16 space tracking and communication center in Vitino, Crimea” (near Yevpatoria)

Kyiv Independent reports:

“Explosions were reported in Yevpatoria in occupied Crimea around 10 p.m. on June 23, according to the news outlet Suspilne Crimea, which cited residents.

One resident described hearing two powerful explosions that shook the windows, as well as the sound of sirens throughout the city, Suspilne Crimea reported.

Yevpatoria is a resort city in western Crimea, located north of Sevastopol.”

Newsweek reported a previous strike on 22 Dec 2023:

“Ukraine struck Russia’s Center for Long-Range Space Communications in the village of Vitino in the Saky region using Storm Shadow missiles…

…”Full name of the center: 40th separate command and measuring complex as part of the Main Test Space Center named after G. S. Titov of the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Federation,” ASTRA said.

The center is one of three complexes that make up Russia’s Yevpatoria Center for Deep Space Communications, which supports manned and robotic space missions.”

That is a question I have had, how much responsibility does the launcher have, and how much does radar and CC and what is their link. There seems to be a limit, but how abs why.

Secure connections, physical communication lines…..

Launchers appear to be the least valuable at least in terms of cost, so as FtrPilot asked and I am too, what are the restrictions(besides being more susceptible to loss and not enough of them)that keep them from being forward deployed

It is apparent that Ukraine not only needs more systems, but many more systems capable of protecting them

“How a Texas Factory Will Become a Key Ammo Supplier for the U.S., Ukraine”

“A General Dynamics facility slated to make artillery shells is part of the Pentagon’s push to produce more weapons domestically”

“MESQUITE, Texas—Walking past new hydraulic presses and orange robots handling semi-finished artillery shells, U.S. Army Secretary Christine Wormuth had a question for a manufacturing company executive.

“Do the Russians have this technology?” Wormuth asked Ibrahim Kulekci, chief executive of the Turkish firm that designed and installed key machinery in the plant.

Kulekci said they wouldn’t get it from his firm. “Keep it that way,” Wormuth responded.

The conflict in Ukraine has left the U.S. military and allies wanting for shells and other firepower, triggering a push to quickly boost production. Long reliant on World War II-era plants, the Pentagon is spending $6 billion to revamp them with modern equipment and expand output at new facilities that can churn out a variety of munitions, from shells to mortars.

Armed with a slice of a $1 billion contract, defense contractor General Dynamics is leaning on complex machines to make ammunition faster and more efficiently. “

“’Russian Saboteurs Behind Arson Attack at German Factory”

“Attack is a sign of the Kremlin’s more aggressive clandestine operations, security officials say”

“BERLIN—As fire swept through a sprawling factory owned by a company that manufactures air-defense systems, thick, dark smoke spread through a neighborhood of luxury villas and diplomatic residences. Police warnings blared, ordering people to shelter indoors.

In the aftermath of last month’s blaze on the outskirts of the German capital, German investigators said the cause was likely an accident. But Western security officials now say the fire was set by Russian saboteurs trying disrupt shipments of critical arms and ammunition to Ukraine.

European countries, seeking to avoid escalation, have been cautious about publicly blaming Moscow, but privately security officials say Russia appears to be stepping up attacks on civilian and military sites and people in Europe connected with efforts to help Ukraine fend off invading Russian troops.”

“Juicy.

On June 21, 2024, a strike was carried out on the 726th Air Defense Training Center in Yeysk, Krasnodar Krai, by two cruise missiles, likely R-360 “Neptune.” The center, which trains personnel to use various UAVs, suffered significant damage. The strike killed instructors and technical personnel from Yelabuga, destroyed ~20 Shahed-136 attack UAVs, ~50 Lancet attack UAVs, and ~40 ZALA reconnaissance UAVs. There is no reported information about military personnel casualties.”

So SAD

“At least 15 law enforcement officers and four civilians were killed in two seemingly coordinated attacks by gunmen in Russia’s southern republic of Dagestan, Russian investigators said on Monday.

Wielding rifles and Molotov cocktails, the attackers assaulted synagogues and Orthodox churches on Sunday night in two major cities of Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim region on the Caspian Sea.

One of the civilians killed was Nikolai Kotelnikov, a priest in the city of Derbent. The attackers also set fire to a synagogue in the city.

For hours, the gunmen were on the loose, engaging in shooting sprees with members of the law enforcement, according to statements from the region’s interior ministry. Five attackers were eventually killed, local officials said.”

“How Ukraine’s Naval Drones Turned the Tide in the Battle of the Black Sea”

“Unmanned vessels developed in the fight against Russia are part of a revolution in modern warfare”

“KYIV, Ukraine—The Russian naval corvette had just left the safety of Sevastopol Bay one morning last fall when an explosion ripped a hole in its hull.

As tugs pulled the ship back to port on Sept. 14, Russian state news agencies claimed it had fought off the latest attack by Ukrainian naval drones—small, explosive craft that had for months been ramming Russian naval ships in the Black Sea. This time, Ukrainian officials added a twist, saying their forces had used an “experimental weapon” as well as drones.

In an interview, the architect of Ukraine’s groundbreaking naval drone program said that the attack marked a first in warfare: The Russian ship had been disabled by a mine laid by a Ukrainian unmanned craft that had hauled it some 250 miles before returning to port.

“Before, naval drones were used mostly for surveillance or logistics,” said Brig. Gen. Ivan Lukashevych of the Security Service of Ukraine, the country’s main security and intelligence agency. “We are doing many things that no one in the world has done.””

Bad news came from Crimea again. Three air defense installations were lost, military personnel were killed

The enemy, unfortunately, again launched a serious missile attack on Crimea. According to two of our sources in the Ministry of Defense, late in the evening of Sunday, June 23, several ATACMS hit the Saki region of the peninsula.

As a result of the strike, two S-400 installations and one S-300 were completely disabled. Important air defense components were also lost.

In addition, enemy missiles hit a military unit near Yevpatoria.

Unfortunately, 7 military personnel were killed .

‘it laid about 15 more mines’

That likely means there are still more mines on the sea bed waiting for RuZZian Boys.

“Lukashevych’s team built a special SeaBaby that could lay mines that Ukraine had received from a Western partner. The so-called bottom mines are made of plastic and weigh about 400 pounds and are hard to find as they nestle into the mud under shallow water. They use acoustic and electromagnetic sensors to detect the presence of a ship, triggering a detonation.

For a month and a half, the team tracked the routes taken by naval ships and civilian traffic, before sending a SeaBaby to lay two mines. On Sept. 14, the Samum, a guided-missile corvette, triggered one of the mines, which ripped a hole in its stern. The boat is still under repair in dry dock.

The SeaBaby went back and forth in the following weeks, covering more than 3,000 miles as it laid about 15 more mines. During one of the trips, detected by three Raptor-class patrol boats, it fired back with a grenade launcher, scattering the enemy craft.

On Oct. 11, an explosion tore into the side of the Pavel Derzhavin, a large patrol boat, as it was entering Sevastopol Bay. It limped into port for checks.”

Tragedy in Sevastopol. We have three serious questions, including about “punishment” for air defense fighters

After the tragic attack on Sevastopol, we simply have to ask difficult questions - both to the military leadership and to the authorities in general. We hate to say this, but the truth is important.

Firstly, we mourn the deaths of civilians and children. This is a terrible tragedy, we need to avenge it and try not to let it happen again. But why doesn’t anyone except us talk about the death of the military?

Unfortunately, the death toll at one of the Black Sea Fleet facilities that was hit by an enemy missile has increased to 12.

Secondly, it is clear that the Americans and the Kiev regime are to blame for the tragedy. But everyone knows that these are our enemies. But why did Maria Zakharova and other officials keep silent about the fact that literally two days before the tragedy, our Foreign Ministry received from Turkey a new demand to give Crimea under Ankara’s control?

“Once again they sent an ultimatum: they say, you better give Crimea under Turkish control. Otherwise something bad will happen. This is not the first time we have received such messages, but we did not pay attention. Now I think it’s not in vain,” a source in the Foreign Ministry told us. Will we ask our Turkish partners questions about this?

Thirdly, we have heard rumors that they want to punish the air defense fighters who shot down missiles over the beach where people died. Some were almost arrested. Is it true? We think the Ministry of Defense should give a public answer. If such rumors are true, then this is simply madness. Guys are heroes, no matter what.

Happy memory to all those who died. But no tragedy can be a reason to hide the truth and not answer uncomfortable questions.

Ukraine’s Tech Hub Develops AI-Driven Drone Swarms to Combat Russian Forces.

Ukraine is about to deploy an AI-powered drone swarm that can work together to destroy Russian tanks and gather intelligence.

Kyiv Post reports:

“A Ukrainian startup says it’s on the brink of revolutionizing warfare with an AI-driven drone swarm capable of coordinated attacks on enemy tanks and intelligence gathering, potentially giving Ukraine a significant advantage in its war with Russia, as per The Times’ report.

“It’s the equivalent of bringing the steam engine into the factory all those years ago,” said Serhii Kuprienko, the founder of the startup. “Our core mission is to get robots to do the fighting, not humans.”

These drones can communicate with each other, make decisions on where to attack, and gather intelligence “faster than any human could,” Kuprienko said.

The Times reported that before the full-scale war, Ukraine had around 20 military tech companies; now, there are 200. Many are focused on drone technology, which is expected to redefine future warfare...

Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation, Alex Bornyakov, said that Ukraine is testing swarm technology with at least one company besides Krupiienko’s. He said that while the drones are capable of operating autonomously, human confirmation is required for targeting to ensure ethical and safety standards are met.

“Technically, they [the drones] could do it by themselves,” he added.

Kuprienko said that his drones could be programmed to recognize and shoot based on uniforms. However, he said, “We don’t allow it ethically and for safety purposes.”

American expert Singer suggests that Ukraine may have already used AI to autonomously destroy targets. He mentions a sophisticated American drone system that identifies enemy vehicles, even if camouflaged, and coordinates automatic strikes.

Singer recalled politicians assuring that this was a line they would never cross but added that it has now been crossed with little controversy.

The ethical debate over autonomous weapons continues among military experts, lawyers, and ethicists, as outlined in the report. Kuprienko repeats the official stance that a human commander must approve each attack. However, he concedes that some commanders might prefer full autonomy to maximize the swarm’s effectiveness, adding “We’re fighting a war here, and we want to win.”

Like Bornyakov, he envisions a “kill box”—an area containing only enemy targets—where a swarm could operate independently.

As Ukraine pushes the boundaries of military technology, the world watches closely, aware that this innovation could reshape the landscape of modern warfare.”

Yesterday they were screaming about the Global Hawk that was present when the ATACMS fell on the beach in Crimea (after the Russians intercepted it, per Russia). So I'm guessing an RQ-4. It wouldn't be much of a challenge. The RQ-4 is unarmed, not very maneuverable, and has no real countermeasures. As I said a week ago:

Shooting down an RQ-4 would have some consequence, but not significant. Certainly not kinetic. After all, Iran has shot one down with no public retaliation.

We also didn't do anything after Russia took down a Reaper by colliding with it, or attempted to down another by dumping fuel on it and popping flares in front of it. But there will be some reaction, though maybe not public.
