I think Trump intentionally reported a weak rumor. It set him up nicely - if they do charge him this week, they look like partisan hacks who telegraphed their intentions. If they don't, it looks like they chickened out and infuriates the lefties who will fret that the great pumpkin let them down again.

There had to be advanced contact with the Secret Service and law enforcement to this information. You can’t sneak up on a former U.S. President without warning and just grab him.
Trump had to know in advance they were intent on the arrest.
If the NYC prosecutor got cold feet, it was because major Democrats did serious polling and found they were about to make a martyr of Trump and greatly improve the odds of his being elected President by a landslide in 2024.
It was a backfire on a monumental scale.
