That is not exactly what I said. The Americans inadvertently created the soil conditions that were perfect for growing poppies. That is when the Pashtuns began cultivating poppies for a cash crop because nothing else that grew in that poor soil had as much profit margin.
The Americans didn't actually plant the poppies obviously but the unintended conditions created after the water in the Helmand River dams started to be released in the mid-50s, created a prime salty soil for poppies to grow where there were none before.
The current hardline regime insists they will eradicate the poppy fields but it has been tried before and failed. There is nothing else the farmers can grow that is so profitable.
