No thanks. We in Maryland have enough problems.
Puerto Rican’s have the advantages of US citizenship and the social welfare benefits that come with it. They also do not pay federal income taxes unless they work for the federal government. The privileges they lack, due to the territory status of the island, is the ability to vote for President and elected representation in Congress.
Puerto Rico has the protection of the US military and irs citizens have access to the federal court system. They use the US dollar for currency and the US Postal Service for mail. If a Puerto Rican moves to a state in the US, he or she can immediately register to vote in that state. However, by becoming a legal resident of a state, he Puerto Rican must pay federal taxes.
Let them go their own way. They’ll lose American citizenship in the process. Then they’ll be no different from any other citizens in any other Latin American country.
Because PR isn’t an automatic Dem slam dunk???
Come on Schmucky, America can always use another basket case. We’re taking in the rest of the failed Hispanic population in this hemisphere.
Puerto Rico is nothing like the United States and thus should not become a state.
Do they use voting machines?
LOL!!!
...but hell bent on amnesty for millions of illegals!
“Puerto Rico is nothing like the United States and thus should not become a state.”
I think you are right. I lived and worked in PR for a year. The people were individually great folks but I did not care for the culture. Those associated with me were hard workers and very family oriented. The politics were corrupt at the time and probably still so...like ours.
They made a big mistake by kicking the Military out of Vieques.
After that it was downhill, and Roosevelt Roads closed and the drug companies bailed out. Hugh financial loss. The island is very pretty.
There are obviously many Puerto Ricans here in Florida and most are hard working good family folks.
But as you say the culture, language, history corruption is not ours.
TO bring the island up to American road, police, infrastructure is beyond reasonable.
And Puerto Ricans are proud as can be and I do not think they care to assimilate in to American culture.
