[snip] The mass of the Venus atmosphere is about 90 times that of the Earth’s atmosphere. 90% of the Earth’s atmosphere is within 10 km of the surface, whereas you have to go to 50 km to capture 90% of the atmosphere of Venus. [/snip]

Yup, but it isn’t the absence of a magnetic field that caused Mars to loose its atmosphere, although that was certainly a factor.

If it really was the dominant factor, Venus would have long since had its atmosphere blasted into space.

If mass were the dominant factor, Earth’s atmosphere would be as dense as Venus’...

...probably even denser, given that our magnetic field would keep the weaker at Earth’s distance solar wind from sweeping it into space.

The solar wind isn’t sufficient to do much to Earth’s atmosphere, with or without our puny magnetic field, and would take a very long time to do it. If we were to artificially add the 78-22 N-O atmosphere to Mars, it would take us perhaps a century to complete the work (mining the outer solar system for frozen forms of the gases, bagging it, and pushing it to Mars), yet even with Mars’ fossil magnetic field the solar wind would require many thousands of years to strip it away again, meaning we’d have more than enough time to keep it topped off.

Thanks for the links.

I just read “Why is only half of Mars magnetized?” and it was very informative and helpful to a dullard like me.
