I will remind all readers that such “open end” gun and ammo questions can be used to target your weapons and your habits.
But the BATF would never participate in baiting operations, would it?

Back in my “hunting days” I used either a M-109A1 with a 155mm shell (HE or WP) or a 152mm gun (HEAT)/launcher and a Shillelagh missile on my M-60-A2.

With the latest guns, scopes, and laser rangefinders, well-practiced hunters are able to confidently take game at over 1,000 yards. Sorry... you lost me right there. I'm a 200-yard hunter at most, and the vast majority of my shots are under 100 yards.

A buddy used to shoot deer and antelope with a 300 Weatherby, and he had a pretty good success rate north of 500 yards. Spent a lot of time sighting-in the gun and understanding how to use it at that range. Bring a strong shoulder.

A 1000-yard shot on a game animal seems highly unethical regardless of accuracy claims.

I don't know any non pros who can kill at 1,000 yards, even with a .338 chambered in lapua.
The go to cartridge to reliably knock down medium size game like deer as well as larger game is the 30.06

Long range hunting is unnecessary and inhumane. Like some dentist posing with a tame lion he illegally shot.
To: w1n1
Who even thinks about taking game at 500 yards, let alone 1000. Seems very irresponsible. Most hunters go for a clean kill.

I don’t know of anyone who actually would take a 1000 yard shot on a deer. We have a 1000 yard range in this area and the ones who shoot there are only interested in killing paper.

1000 yards? The animal is a speck on the horizon.
Get our of your truck and close the distance to less than 200.

270Win for the deer & antelope.
300Win for the elk.
Both are very flat for the ranges I would ever take a shot at while hunting.
