They were mandated to offer it due to mpg “average” standards. Where a make’s entire line of vehicles was averaged.

Ah, yes. The CAFE standards.
I sure miss the Cadillacs of 30+ years ago when they were the size of boats. On a long trip, I could sprawl out across the back seat and take a nap while someone else drove. A Cadillac isn’t a Cadillac unless it is BIG.
They sure were boats. I had an uncle who started buying Cads in the 50s, he’d get a new one every 2 or 3 years because he’d driven the wheels off them. My cousin still jokes and says he doesn’t remember his dad ever getting the oil changed in them. :)
If fuel prices stay this low there is gonna be one heck of a sale on small cars because manufacturers are mandated to meet a certain level of fleet fuel mileage by the fed govt.
Because left to their own preferences, Americans tend to love pickups and SUVs.
I will continue cheering for every GM failure until the entire corrupt company is dead. The GM bankruptcy violated contract law and violated bankruptcy law, stiffing the rightful claimants to its assets, and the “New GM” deserves to die. I am boycotting GM forever; I even rejected a GM rental car.
OUCH.
The hysterical part was that the Cavalier it was based off was a better vehicle, less expensive too.
But that is exceedingly biting commentary.
