When I started college 25 years ago, the remedial classes had more students in them than any other class. They were the “weeding out” classes. I can’t imagine it is much different today.

I started college in 1961. I don't recall there ever being remedial classes. I suppose that, at that time, the remediation was considered to be done in high school where there were classes like 'bone-head english and math'.

I have had discussions with presidents of a university as well as a community college. They complain about the amount of remediation they have to provide just to get the students up to basic competency.
