2002: Eight local utilities sell Vermont Yankee to Entergy Nuclear of Mississippi for $180 million. The sales deal included a revenue-sharing provision: If the plant continued to operate after 2012, it would share 50 cents of every dollar earned above a specified price, for 10 years.
I am guessing this provision in the sale of the plant is what is making the plant economically unviable.
Give away 50% of your profits for 10 years and it makes running the plant a bit tough in a competitive market.

I'd suggest you read up a little more on the Pebble Bed design before you bet any money on them. Both Germany and South Africa put a lot of cash into that design and they both got burned bad. They are not what some of the PR cracks them up to be.
The standard Pressurized LWR has proven itself to be reliable, highly efficient and safe over the last 6 decades. The newer 'passive' PWR's are even better.

I believe Vermont also plans to augment by buying power from Canada.
Oh, the irony.

There are several reliable nuclear power plants running in Connecticut right now. Of course they're inside submarines😃

aquaman I am not. LOL! The real danger lies in dhmo when it reaches it’s freezing point.
After reading further down on the post, I really have to wonder about the writer of the article. Or maybe not.

I looked this up since I didn’t get ahold of my brother who is in the nuclear related biz. Apparently two of their three reactors are still running. He had said that the French have standardized on just a few designs whereas our industry as a bunch of different kinds. Millstone has three completely different reactors. Makes perfect sense. Not.
