Agreed. Among those who do get more credit and fame in our society, in large measure fueled by the media, are politicians. Politicians routinely enrich themselves while in office - or shortly thereafter. GIs often struggle financially, and their entire families have to live frugally. That's service and love of country.

I read the book a while back and it was a tough read. I had to put it down several times and do something else. The movie was rough too.
