We have this:

D-Link Whole-Home Router 1000, Wireless-N (DIR-645)

It blasts through our house, our neighbor's house. We can be on it from the end of the block. Our neighbor was having a lot of trouble at his house about a year ago, stopped by: what are you using. Your wireless is showing up in my house full strength.

We connect 2 game consoles, 2 rokus, 2 tablets, 2 android phones, 2 security cameras, a Surface, and 2 computers to it, streaming netflix all day, essentially, without issue. Can't say the same for our cable modem... but that is for another day.

D-Link has updated routers, too.

Don’t rent. That’s too high. Most any router available at the big box stores will work just fine. You should be able to get a decent one in the $50 range. Make sure to go through the security setting and set a password to prevent moochers from pirating off your wireless.

My IT guy swears by the Apple routers.
