I guess, I let my opinion of that clan of drunken, rapists, anti-semites, philandering, lying, drug addicted, killer Kennedys, get the better of me.

Nixon was worried that the democrats ‘had’ something on him. He had set up his own group of people to ‘investigate’ such things. Often Presidents had Hoover do these kinds of things, thus obligating themselves to him.

Nixon mentions Hoover on several of his office tapes, the most infamous being in late 1971, when he said, “as soon as I am reelected I'm getting rid of that old bastard.” Hoover could not get ‘up’ on Nixon and feared that his time had come. As it would turn out, he died before Nixon could fire him.

There has been clear evidence that someone knew about Nixon's ‘plumbers’ and had been feeding information to the justice department as early as 1970. E. Howard Hunt sated several times that he ‘knew’ it was Hoover that was tracking them and blown the whistle.

It's rather funny that liberals try to link Nixon and Hoover together as if they were great conspirators. The actual truth is:

FDR (D) - allowed Hoover to report to him directly and had him spy on Walter Reuther and the teamsters.

Truman (D) - didn't like Hoover but was afraid to act.

Eisenhower (R) could not stand Hoover and minimized him. Swore he would get rid of him before he left office. The U2 incident derailed those plans.

Kennedy (D) Used Hoover to spy on the civil rights movement and to ‘fix’ situations involving beds JFK shouldn't have been sleeping in. The wire tap authorizations Hoover used on Martin Luther King were signed by Bobby Kennedy (boy does that make liberals heads explode!)

LBJ (D) Used Hoover to spy on the civil rights movement and the antiwar movement.

Nixon (R) -Zip

That facts make it very clear - almost ALL of the abuses that Hoover committed and liberals go so crazy over, happened while a democrat was President.

I knew several union guys who believed Johnson had JFK killed, but Johnson only covered up Castro’s involvement because he didn’t want to go to war with Cuba.

Last I heard the FBI, KGB and Cubans believed Lee Harvey Oswald worked for Castro, especially after Oswald met with Cuban agents in Mexico City.

Most people? Hoover was dead by the time of the first Watergate Hotel’s ‘break in’ by Nixon’s guys. How could he have ratted them out if he was dead?

Well obviously he did it from the grave - everyone knows that.

I should have written Plumbers OF Watergate. Yes Hoover died a couple of months before. But both Liddy and Hunt said they were being stalked for more than a year, and they knew Hoover was behind it. Interestingly enough, it was really all for naught. There was nothing the democrats had that could have stopped Nixon, but his need to know forced the Plumbers to continue on when they already knew someone was setting them up.

"It concludes that Kennedy was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald, a disturbed ex-Marine who had exhibited erratic actions and behavior a Communist sympathizer who harangued his fellow Marines with propaganda and who moved to the Soviet Union and that Oswald shot the President from the 6th floor of the Dallas Book Depository building before murdering Officer J.D. Tippit on the same afternoon in front of witnesses on a Dallas street..."

“I should have written Plumbers OF Watergate.”

Around a dozen years ago a couple of liberal writers, Len Colodny and Robert Gettlin, set out to write a definitive book that would be a ‘harmony’ of all of the first person accounts of Watergate. They even managed to get John Dean to act as their advisor.

The writers uncovered some interesting and little known stories that involve Watergate. The Joint Chiefs running a spy operation on the White House. Bob Woodward being a young Naval officer assigned as a liaison to the White House. A lawyer involuntarily committed to St Elizabeth’s hospital to shut him up. Xaviera Hollander, of ‘Happy Hooker’ fame, running a call girl ring out of an office in the Watergate building. Running a call girl ring right out of DNC headquarters and from the very desk where the Plumbers planted their bug.

It happened that Mo Biner, John Dean’s stunning fiancé, had been one of the call girls that Hollander was running, at least until she hooked up with John Dean. And that was information John Dean wanted kept private.

When Colodny and Gettlin began asking John Dean questions about Mo and the call girl operation Dean became hostile and refused to give them any more assistance. The writers continued their research without him and came to the conclusion that the Watergate breakin was planned and ordered by John Dean on his own. He planned the breakin to cover up his girlfriend’s prostitution background and maybe to get some dirt to use against the Democrats.

When Watergate blew up John Dean ran off to the Watergate Committee and told them a story implicating Nixon and the rest of the White House to cover his own hide. And it worked. When Gordon Liddy read the book he concluded that Colodny and Gettlin had managed to discover the truth about Watergate. He concluded that he had actually gone to prison to protect John Dean instead of Richard Nixon, a situation that he disliked immensely.

That is a great book - read it years ago. (Where the reporter Woodward had worked for Admiral Moorer, had contact with Haig, but denied it all.)

I’ve always wondered about Watergate, and the lost 7.5 minutes (or whatever) on the tapes. IIRC right before the gap Nixon is talking about how Watergate might “bring up the whole Cuban thing.”

I always wondered if the big deal in covering it up was to protect the other actions Nixon’s Cuban “plumbers” were involved in. They had been involved in the failed Bay of Pigs attack back in JFK’s day, and some conspiracy folks say the “cubans” were tied to the assassination.

Plus in some books, they have the “bums in Dallas” being Hunt(?) and someone else of Watergate fame.

And not that Nixon was involved in the assassination - but didn’t want the truth coming out about it. Just like him trying to keep the “Pentagon Papers” from coming out - which were policy papers from the Johnson era, about the failed Vietnam policies of the Johnson administration.

I imagine that the gap in the Nixon tapes contained comments that revealed Nixon’s role in covering up the breakin.

‘Silent Coup’ makes the case that Nixon thought that John Mitchell had authorized the breakin. And John Mitchell thought that Nixon had authorized it. Colodny and Gettlin learned that the White House inner circle never sat down and discussed Watergate among themselves, they just began covering it up right from the start. The irony is that they were covering up for John Dean. To make matters worse Nixon asked John Dean to investigate what had happened, so Dean was in the perfect position to see that his role was always kept hidden.

The Pentagon Papers... the release of the Pentagon Papers provided a goldmine of intel for our enemies. What looks innocuous to the average reader often isn’t. All sorts of militarily valuable information was contained in the papers Ellsberg released.
