I think that $2.5 billion figure, which I’ve heard before, is the amount of cash and goods seized from Americans during the last twenty years or so, not Canadians. I believe the author of this piece has it wrong.

I heard Florida has rated a “D” on Asset Forfeiture.
Maine rates an A-, because police departments and sheriff’s departments in Maine are not allowed to keep any money they seize.

All confiscated money goes into the state’s general fund, and it’s not that easy for the authorities to confiscate the assets in the first place.

Yikes. I didn’t know that $2.5 billion was just for federal asset forfeitures. What a country.

This numbers are correct. When I subscribed to WSJ, I was amazed at the number of asset forfeiture notices that they published. The government had to print so many pages, so often, in nearly microscopic print that it revised the notice requirement such that they now only make notification on the Internet at forfeiture.gov.
Today’s US Attorney’s listing is 615 pages long.

You could be mixing vodka with it or another type of alcohol.

There is also the possibility that you might be smoking crack, using the can to heat up the crystals.

Judging from the amount of ‘snow birds’ you see heading south in the fall and North in the Spring, I would imagine a LOT of US businesses depend on their business..including rental units in Florida, RV Parks, Gas Stations etc etc.

Maybe if Canada were to advise against visiting the US, the states would maybe take measures to knock this crap off.

We surely (apparently) have no influence on it because it never ‘affects’ or ‘bothers’ us until it happens to ‘us’ personally.

Re: “Not just from Canadians.”

Actually, not from ANY Canadians.

I word-scanned the Post article, plus the 3-part Post series it linked to.

The words “Canada” and “Canadians” do not appear in any of them.

I have no expertise on domestic forfeiture, so I'll leave that subject to others.

I know some counties in Texas made out good on asset forfeiture.

Yes, I vacationed in Palm Springs one time and the locals told me that a lot of the houses there were owned by Canadians that spend winters there; big help to economy.

I believe it.

"But Canadians do not just like to travel within Canada; we enjoy visiting the United States, and in record numbers we also travel overseas. Indeed, for Canadian travellers, 2007 was record-breaking in a number of ways: it was the first time Canadians took more than 25 million overnight trips abroad, and our spending on those trips was the highest ever at $22.5 billion."

They are coming here to spend money on vacation, buy homes, buy stuff to bring back without VAT and high taxes.

I also believe many police would love to confiscate more money from non-US voters...

This is about $1000 per Canuck.

Can you point me to something concise from a reputable source that I could present as proof to skeptical libs? They refuse to believe anything bad about Mother Government.

The Washington Post is well-regarded by libs.

You could also direct them to forfeiture.gov, though that includes criminal as well as civil forfeitures.

WaPo also has a great YouTube video on the topic.

There are several other videos by Institute for Justice, which is libertarian.

You can also acknowledge that this started under GHWB and has grown ever since.

I wouldn’t advise that you take $10,000 in cash out of the country. You’ll be setting yourself up for an asset forfeiture event.

I think I was unclear. The $2.5 billion was for civil asset forfeitures (i.e., typically no search warrant and no arrest) under federal programs. Up to 80% of that total went to state and municipal governments and agencies. I think I did mention that is was a total covering the period since 2001. Several states have separate, abusive civil forfeiture programs as well, and aren't included. However, a number of states have tightened up on this due to past abuses.

Getting caught carrying around thousands of dollars in cash on person will raise suspicions to police. Now a days they got these great things called credit cards.

But they should also know to never give consent to a search.
And ask the police over and over if they are being detained, or are free to go.

I never been searched when pulled over,

Not a problem for me, personally. I have neither a passport nor $10,000.
