It’s unfortunate we have such a screwed up system for selecting Presidents. Not to defend Perry, but seriously... What does having good “debate” skills have to do with the skill set needed by a President? Nothing.
Presidents don’t debate issues. Truly they don’t even need to have some total encyclopedic knowledge of issues. What they need is to be able to recognize good advice when they hear it, and sense when they know enough to make a decision. Then they need to be decisive, and move on to the next thing.
We’re better at selecting an American Idol than we are at selecting a President. Nothing about our process really tests for the right stuff. As exhibit “A” I would present the current occupant.
Time for an Aggie Joke.
Perry’s a drunk.
Perry’s done. Newt knocks it out of the park AGAIN. His depth of knowledge and ability to articulate the conservative vision — no one comes close to his talent.
Every day it becomes more clear he is the guy who can not just beat the communist, but beat him badly.
Its pretty clear at this point that Gov Perry's main goal is to survive the debates. Sorry that doesn't cut it for a presidential candidate.
Having said that. If you take away Perry's huge brainfart, he did fairly well tonight. Too bad its the one bad reply that everyone will remember.
I missed the actual debate (and thus Perry’s total performance) so I can only base my opinion on the clip I saw of the gaffe.
My feeling: if Perry had been doing well and leading the pack thus far, it wouldn’t have been a big deal. The problem, as I see it, is that Perry has been needing a big win in the debates for a while now. Tonight’s gaffe may not cost him points, but it won’t help him make up lost ground in the polls, either. And with the general election less than a year away, time is not his friend.
Hopefully he’ll joke about it, “I’d like to put all three behind us, so we can all forget them.” BTW, does anyone know what are the three departments he wants to eliminate?
It’s like hitting a really big pothole; fortunately, he was already moving so slowly that he probably didn’t break his shock absorbers.
SNL was funny.
Aside from the debates, I believe Perry would be a decisive leader and that is very important. But getting the opportunity in light of all the gaffes may not come. But of all the candidates, I really believe he would be most able to handle the enormity of the job with wisdom.
