It’s a decent response to the legislature but the illegals that live in New Mexico are not in a state of “panic”. I have been to a rural MVD twice in the past two weeks and each time there has been an illegal applying for a drivers license. The state is helpful enough to supply spanish speaking MVD workers who ask the illegals whether they have a social security number and when they reply that they do not, the MVD asks them if they have a matricula consular (Mexican Embassy papers). If not, the MVD actually instructs the illegal on how to obtain one. In the past three years I have been in a MVD five times and each time, without fail, there is an illegal applying for a drivers license in a rural office with a maximum capacity of 8 people.

The only people that will actually be affected by Martinez’s actions are illegals that do not live in New Mexico. There are a large number of them, but most of the illegals with drivers licenses live in the state. It’s a shame she’s not having ICE agents there which would seem to be within her authority but would cause an uproar from the democrats.

The real solution is to mandate that state’s have secure drivers licenses that require proof of legal residency. Every time it looks like it will finally be put in force after years of waiting, there’s another waiver. If it went into force, New Mexico would be forced to stop giving drivers licenses to illegals.

Martinez is great, much better than I expected when I voted for her and she’s doing what she can with drivers licenses for illegals despite the problems I listed above. It’s the NM Senate that is the problem. One of Martinez’s first actions as governors was to axe the entire Environmental Improvement Board because they created an “anti-business climate”. They had recently tried to kneecap New Mexico by creating a carbon emissions scheme.

Letters will notify people they have 30 days to schedule an IN-PERSON appointment with MVD. Documents to verify residency include utility bills, pay stubs and lease agreements.

Now everyone on that list – illegal aliens, foreign nationals overstaying their visas, potential terrorists – all will have to make a personal appearance in Albuquerque or Las Cruces within 30 days to prove N.M. residency, or lose their license. Predictably, all hell broke loose. Illegal aliens who do live in New Mexico are now panicking that if they show up to verify residency, they will be DEPORTED.”
