[more on the crash]

The pilot of a single-engine plane that crashed and burned near the Lago Vista airport Monday radioed air traffic controllers there was a problem on board the plane just before the crash.
KVUE Online Video

KVUE's Clara Tuma reports

Derrich Pollock died in the crash Monday afternoon.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Administration say records show that Pollock made the radio call just after he took off from the Lago Vista airport.

His plane crashed just north of the airport in a heavily wooded ravine. Emergency crews responded to a report of a grass fire, but after reaching the area realized the fire had been caused by the crash.

Pollock, 45, leaves behind his wife of 18 years and four children, Ryan, 17; Kristen, 15; Will, 13; and Rachel, 11.

Friends say he was an experienced pilot, devout Christian and devoted husband and father.

He loved fishing and flying.

"Derrich was just a real friendly outgoing person," said Michael Lewis, senior pastor of the Great Hills Baptist Church, where Pollock was a member for more than 20 years. "He loves his family, and of course, he loves God."

Lewis said Pollock frequently flew him to speaking engagements, often joining him on the podium to share his own testimony about his relationship with God before the pastor spoke.

"His passion was flying," Lewis said. "The way he died was the way he lived. He just enjoyed flying."

During Hurricane Katrina, Pollock was instrumental in organizing airlifts of supplies to the area, often using his own money to buy bottles of water and other necessities for those devastated by the floods. At times, he asked friends to light the runways with flashlights to help speed the process along.

"Derrich did that 24/7 for many days," Lewis said.

Pollock died Monday afternoon when his single-engine Cessna crashed and burned in a wooded area just north of the Lago Vista airport. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Administration and Federal Aviation Administration combed over the charred wreckage Tuesday looking for clues as to what went wrong.

"Right at the beginning I'm probably not starting with much, so it will make things more difficult,'' said NTSB investigator Craig Hatch.

And just as the NTSB is looking for answers, so are Pollock's many friends.

"This is a shock to friends and family and the like,'' said John Kirkland, who worked alongside Pollock in the Austin Christian Bass Club.

Kirkland says Pollock was a careful, experienced pilot who didn't take chances.

He said Pollock had a Bible verse citation on his plane's tail.

Pollock chose Isaiah 40:31, which says, "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not grow faint."

Greyhound Bus Catches Fire on Bypass
Posted: 11:02 AM Feb 20, 2007
Last Updated: 12:43 AM Feb 21, 2007

A Greyhound Bus headed south on the U.S. 31 Bypass caught fire around 8:45 Tuesday morning. All passengers were able to get off the Chicago bound bus with their belongings. One passenger was slightly injured when he jumped out a bus window, but no one was injured badly enough to be taken to the hospital.

Firefighters tell us the bus started to lose power as it headed south near Nimtz Parkway in South Bend. The driver was trying to get the bus to South Bend Regional Airport when it started to smoke. Passengers then yelled for the bus driver to pull over and he did.

The fire on the bus was kept in the engine compartment. There were roughly 35 passengers on board when the fire broke out. Crews brought in Transpo buses to bring those passengers to the Bus Terminal at South Bend Regional Airport. Passengers then had to make other arrangements to continue their trip.

We have a crew continuing to follow this story. They'll bring us the latest information on the air on NewsCenter 16.

Four LDS missionaries kidnapped in Nigeria

http://www.heraldextra.com/content/view/210899/

Tuesday, February 20, 2007
UPDATE: Four LDS missionaries kidnapped in Nigeria
Associated Press

Four missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
have been abducted and are being held hostage near Port Harcourt,
Nigeria, a church spokesman said Tuesday.

All four men are Nigerian nationals between the ages of 19 and 21,
church spokesman Mark Tuttle said.

It was unclear Tuesday when the four had been taken and who was holding
them, Tuttle said. A story posted on The Salt Lake Tribune Web site
said
the abduction occurred Saturday.

The church is not commenting on the kidnappers' demands but is working
with local officials to secure the missionaries release.

The Salt Lake City-based Mormon church has 74,055 members in Nigeria,
Tuttle said, with 109 congregations or wards. There are 352 young
missionaries serving there, Tuttle said.

"We pray for the welfare of these young men and are doing everything
possible to resolve this matter," he said, reading from a statement.

The kidnapping comes amid increasing unrest in the country's southern
oil region. Hostages are generally released unharmed, Tuttle said.

Scores of foreign workers have been kidnapped in the Niger Delta region
since January.
This story appeared in The Daily Herald on page A1.

You are welcome.

I started to worry about this area several years ago, it is a pass through for traffic going east/west and north/south.

LOL, not that it is a big problem, since i no longer drive.

Kadyrov Seeks More Control Over Chechen Energy Firm

Wednesday, February 21, 2007. Issue 3601. Page 5.
Kadyrov Seeks More Control Over Chechen Energy Firm
The Moscow Times

Acting Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov on Monday called for a new
economic strategy to make Chechnya financially less dependent on
Moscow.

Kadyrov said that if Chechnya could develop its own economy,
particularly its oil sector, it could become "a highly profitable
donor region," Itar-Tass quoted him as saying at a roundtable in
Grozny.

Grozneftegaz, which is 51 percent owned by Rosneft and 49 percent
controlled by the Chechen government, currently extracts the
republic's oil and gas reserves. Kadyrov complained that although
Chechnya has such a large stake in Grozneftegaz, the regional
government still has no real say in running the company, the Vremya
Novostei newspaper reported Tuesday.

According to official figures published on Rosneft's web site, oil
production in Chechnya in 2005 totaled 2.2 million tons, while gas
output reached 500 million cubic meters.

"With average annual production increases of more than 240 percent
since its creation in 2000, the enterprise has been one of Rosneft's
most successful," the web site said.

But Kadyrov said Grozny had not profited from the success of the
Chechnya's energy sector. Chechen oil and gas reserves are mainly used
for export and the profits do not flow back to the republic, he said.

Plowing more of the profits generated by Chechen oil and gas
production back into the republic's economy is not a new idea. In
April 2004, then-President Akhmad Kadyrov, Ramzan Kadyrov's father,
planned to create a new oil company that would give Chechnya a larger
share of profits. But the plan did not work then and it is likely to
do so now because Russian politicians are unwilling to allow Chechnya
to become financially independent, analysts said.

Moreover, Chechnya is not alone in not being allowed to retain the
proceeds of its energy reserves, said Valery Nesterov, oil and gas
analyst at Troika Dialog.

Al-Qaeda releases alleged `martyr' video

AP, ISLAMABAD
Tuesday, Feb 20, 2007, Page 3

Al-Qaeda has released a video showing a young man asking for forgiveness from family, friends and teachers before he purportedly carries out a suicide car bombing against foreign troops in Afghanistan.

The video also carries comments from Ayman al-Zawahri, al-Qaeda's No. 2 leader, as a train of armed men are shown walking through mountains and while an explosion hits a military vehicle on a turn in a road.

In the video, the man, who does not identify himself, asks his parents to pray for their patience when they get word that he has been "martyred."

"I tell my parents that when they hear of my martyrdom, that I have given a sacrifice for the religion, they should offer prayers and ask God to grant them patience because people have given great sacrifices for the religion," the man said in Pashto, the language spoken by Pashtuns, Afghanistan's largest ethnic-group from which the Taliban militia draws its main support.

A US military campaign ousted the Taliban from power in late 2001 for harboring al-Qaeda.

IntelCenter, a US group that tracks extremist messages, said on Sunday that the video was released on the Internet over the weekend and was the latest in a stepped-up media campaign promoting jihad by al-Qaeda.

Afghanistan saw a surge in suicide attacks last year as militants adopted a tactic common in Iraq but rare in Afghanistan until 2005.

In the video, the young man is seen sitting in front of a bare wall. An AK-47 rifle is propped against the wall on one side and another weapon, apparently a grenade launcher, on the other.

He apparently reads from the Quran, which is not visible in the video. He is wearing a woolen pakool hat and shalwar kameez, the traditional dress of long shirt and baggy pants common in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Another shot shows him cutting wires in what appears to be a bomb-making process. The video also shows munition boxes and a large steel trunk loaded in the back of a white car.

Then the man drives the car out of a walled compound and, after a man that IntelCenter identifies as senior Taliban leader Mullah Dadullah hails suicide attacks against "infidels" in Afghanistan, what appear to be military vehicles are seen traveling on a dirt road. The shaky video then shows what could be an explosion.

It was not known when or where in Afghanistan the purported attack was carried out.

The al-Zawahri comments were the same as those on a video posted Friday showing another purported attack on US and Afghan forces in Afghanistan.

Smuggling of US-bound Chinese growing in Peru
PARADISE LOST: People-trafficking in the South American country follows a tradition of emigration to the US, but the dangers involved are increasing

AFP, LIMA
Wednesday, Feb 21, 2007, Page 3

Thousands of Chinese immigrants are pouring into Peru every year, lured by mafia promises of quick passage to the US.

But the American dreams of these young economic migrants often end in extortion, violence or abandonment on the side of the road or on a deserted beach.

This was the fate of 74 Chinese migrants sent back to Peru by Costa Rican authorities in October after being rescued from a boat that had been drifting for weeks and was about to sink into the Pacific Ocean.

Another 54 were found abandoned without food or documents in a cove near Talara in northern Peru last month after they were promised passage to the US through Central America.

According to the country's office of immigration, DIGEMIN, some 8,778 Chinese nationals entered the country legally last year, of which only 733 were then legally allowed to leave for the US.

"Most Chinese are legally entering the country on a [tourist] visa, and they mainly come from southern China," DIGEMIN director Diomedes Diaz said. "These people come here tricked by organizations with international links into thinking that paradise awaits them in the United States."

For these high-risk journeys, "the family or the mafia loans them the money," said Isabelle Lausent-Herrera, a researcher who specializes in Asian migration in Peru at the National Center for Scientific Research.

The migrants risk more than deportation. They often offer up family members who have remained behind in China as collateral, sell all their belongings or promise to work for years to repay their debts.

"They borrow from [Chinese] banks which specialize in this type of trafficking and have links to the mafia who ensure that those who don't repay in time are punished," Lausent-Herrera said.

In recent years, 43 percent of illegal Chinese migrants have come from Fujian Province, while a large portion also come from Guangdong Province.

"Ultimately, the Chinese are following the same path as was taken in the 19th century to enter the United States where they pass through Peru," Lausent-Herrera said.

Those wealthy enough to pay up to US$70,000 for transport, false documents and lodgings can secure a comfortable air passage from Peru to the US.

Typical migrants, however, usually pay US$15,000 to US$20,000 to find temporary work in Peruvian grocery stores, Chinese restaurants or casinos and risk violence, extortion, starvation and sickness on more dangerous land or sea routes.

While in Peru they blend easily into a Chinese community founded in the 19th century to harvest guano and which is now several hundred thousand people strong.

But Peruvian police say they are now overwhelmed with at least a dozen gangs shuttling illegal immigrants through their borders.

Iran Tests Impenetrable Communications System

http://english.farsnews.com/newstext.php?nn=8512010350

Iran Tests Impenetrable Communications System

TEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- Ground forces of Iran's Islamic Revolution's
Guards Corps (IRGC) successfully tested an impenetrable intranet
communications network during the second stage of their extensive war
games
codenamed 'Eqtedar' (Might).

The system has been designed and developed by IRGC experts.

The second phase of the IRGC maneuvers which started in 16 provinces of
the
country on Tuesday also included test firing of 620 shoulder launch
missiles
and different types of anti-air defense systems such as anti-aircraft,
anti-helicopter and anti-missile systems.

The IRGC ground force units also exercised different tactics for
encountering air aggression by the enemy troops at this stage of the
maneuvers.

The extensive military exercises of the IRGC ground force started in 16
different provinces of the country on Monday.

During the three-day-long maneuvers, 20 infantry and mechanized
brigades of
IRGC's ground forces practice different tactics in three different
stages
while using the most advanced weaponries.

A statement released by IRGC's public relations on Sunday said that the
war
games have been designed to help forces keep up their preparedness for
all-around defense and asymmetric war through practice of the various
types
of battle tactics.

According to the statement, the maneuvers, code named 'Eghtedar'
(Might),
are the last in a series of war games foreseen in IRGC's schedule for
this
year.

Iranian IRGC troops have already staged several other military
exercises
during this (Iranian solar calendar) year, including 'the Great
Prophet' 1
and 2 as well as two other missile war games by IRGC naval forces
called
'Ra'd' (thunder) and Sa'eqeh' (lightening).

Iran test-fired its short-range Zelzal and Fajr-5 missiles during its
recent
maneuvers. While the Zalzal is a solid fuel missile, the Fajr-5
missile,
from the Persian word meaning dawn, is an artillery rocket developed by
Iran
in early 2006. It includes a mobile platform and its primary role is to
engage land targets, with a range of 50 miles.

Iran also held three large-scale military exercises last year. In its
April
exercises, Iran tested what it called an "ultra-horizon" missile, which
is
fired from helicopters and jets, and the Fajr-3 missile, which can
evade
radar and use multiple warheads to hit several targets simultaneously.

Iran regularly holds large maneuvers, often using them to test weapons
developed by its arms industry.

UCLA Sponsors of Terrorism
By Anonymous
FrontPageMagazine.com | April 4, 2003

[Editor’s Note: We received this memo from students at UCLA. The author of the memo is unknown, but its contents have been checked with the students who attended some of the events and with experts in this area.]

UCLA’s Radical Islamist Front

During the past several years the UCLA Muslim Student Association (MSA) has acted in collaboration with a number of Islamic groups and individuals. The MSA operates both on campus and off. They organize events featuring militant speakers, co-sponsor events and conferences with radical Islamic groups, and co-sponsor fundraisers for killers and Islamic radicals. In addition, they use their publication, Al-Talib, to disseminate their radical, anti-Semitic, anti-Israel views.
Anti-Israel Protest

On October 22, 2000, a viciously anti-Israel protest took place at the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles. This hate-filled rally, ostensibly a protest against "Israeli aggression," was organized by two UCLA students, Arif Shaikh and Ahmed Shama. Shaikh is a UCLA graduate student of Arabic and Shama is a past president (president at the time of this rally) of the UCLA Muslim Student Association. On the official rally notification e-mail sent by the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the e-mail addresses of both students are listed as contacts for further information. In fact, Shama’s UCLA student e-mail was listed: ashama@ucla.edu.

At the rally anti-Semitic statements and shouts of "Death to Israel!" and "Death to Jews!" were commonplace. (Ed. note: a video was attached to the memo) "Victory to Islam! Death to the Jews" could also be heard from Shama, the MSA president and rally co-sponsor. He also stated: "Our solution is simple. We are not simply anarchists . . . . Our solution is the establishment of justice by Islamic means. That is the only solution to this Israeli apartheid." Shama criticized Israeli/Palestinian peace talks, saying:

"When we see negotiations between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who is a racist Zionist, and on the other side is Yasser Arafat, who used to be a so-called "Arab activist," but is now a racist Zionist, being mediated by Bill Clinton, who is a racist Zionist. And Hosni Mubarak, I am Egyptian, Hosni Mubarak, the President of Egypt, who is a racist Zionist. And King Hussein II of Jordan, who is a racist Zionist. When we see that a peace process is being negotiated between Zionists, mediated by Zionists, controlled by Zionists, and being portrayed in the media by Zionists, we come and we condemn all of you. We don’t care about your background, we don’t care which language you speak, we don’t care about what religion you claim to hold. Because you are racist Zionists. And we will not accept their definition of peace. I will not accept their definition of Islam. We will define Islam the way that the Prophet, peace be upon him, defined it."

Not satisfied with just rhetoric, Shama himself burned an Israeli flag while a jubilant crowd chanted "Khaibar, Khaibar, O Jews, the army of Mohammed is coming for you," and "Death to Israel, victory to Islam."

One speaker, Sohail Shakry, president of MSA West, quoted Hizbollah Secretary General Sheik Nasrallah:

"If we look at the situation the past 52 years, the biggest impediment to peace has been the existence of the Zionist State of Israel. Since the existence of this state, we have had wars, conflicts, killings, massacres. If we really want true peace then we must see that it goes with the elimination of the Zionist entity in the middle of the Muslim world."

Another speaker was Hussam Ayloush, a member of CAIR-Southern California region. Besides ranting over the "racist" practices of Israel and over "our tax dollars used to kill the innocents of Palestine," Ayloush pleaded for the rally participants to send money to help the "victims and orphans." He suggested sending money to the Holy Land Foundation, which is a known associate of terrorists and is on the United States list of terrorist supporters. In fact, the United States government froze the assets of the Holy Land Foundation in December 2001 due to its support for terrorist activity. On September 14, 2000, U.S. Agency for International Development ("USAID") notified HLF that due to national security concerns it has been removed from the list of USAID’s registry of organizations eligible for funding. In the notice, USAID included a copy of a letter from the office of the under secretary of state, dated August 30, 2000, which stated:

"I believe you [USAID] are aware that the Department of State has had some concerns about this organization [HLF]. The Department has now determined that the continuation of this relationship is contrary to the national defense and foreign policy interests of the United States. Accordingly, I request that USAID take all necessary steps to terminate this relationship immediately."

Organizing On-Campus Events

On May 20, 2001, UCLA hosted a conference, co-sponsored by the UCLA MSA, called "The Israeli Palestinian Crisis: New Conversations for a Pluralist Future." Among the radical Islamic organizations that participated in the event and sent speakers to this conference were the Council on American Islamic Relations, CAIR, and the Muslim Public Affairs Council, MPAC. Nihad Awad, the founder and executive director of CAIR, in a speech delivered at Barry University in March 1994, made the statement, "…after I researched the situation inside and outside Palestine, I am in support of the Hamas movement…."[1] In May 2000, Rafiq Jaber, a member of CAIR’s Board of Directors, signed a press release regarding the Israeli withdrawal from Southern Lebanon:

"I thank Allah for this victory which was due to the tremendous efforts of the Islamic resistance movement, Hizbollah…. Maybe the PA will take a hard look at the slippery road it is now traveling and join the resistance to Zionist occupation in order to liberate the land of Palestine. I firmly believe that Palestine will never be liberated by any other means."[1]

The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) claims to represent American Muslims and describes itself as "a public service agency working for the civil rights of American Muslims, for the integration of Islam into American pluralism, and for a positive, constructive relationship between American Muslims and their representatives." In reality, MPAC is a radical Islamic organization that openly defends terrorist groups such as Hizbollah. Salam Al-Marayati, MPAC’s executive director, wrote the following in 1999:

"Hezbollah organized the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut in October 1983 killing 241 marines, the largest number of American troops killed in a single operation since the end of the Vietnam war. Yet this attack, for all the pain it caused, was not in a strict sense, a terrorist operation. It was a military operation, producing no civilian casualties -- exactly the kind of attack that Americans might have lauded had it been directed against Washington's enemies." [1] [2]

This so-called "pluralistic" conference featured statements that can only be classified as anti-Semitic and anti-Israel. Israel was declared to be a terrorist state and a classic example of racist apartheid. Salam al-Marayati decried the use of American weapons and tax dollars that finance Israeli aggression. Dr. Riad Abdel Karim, a member of the aforementioned CAIR, devoted his speech to painstakingly equating Zionism with South African apartheid. (Ed.: A full transcript of this event was attached) Rashid Khalidi, a noted Arab professor in Chicago, defended the current intifada. Mahmoud Ibrahim, a professor at Cal Poly Pomona, inferred that the actions of the Israeli army are the same as those actions that the Jews endured during the Holocaust.

The UCLA MSA sponsored the on-campus "Palestinian Freedom Week" from May 30-31, 2002. Among the featured speakers was the aforementioned Hussam Ayloush, Executive Director of CAIR-Los Angeles.

Radical Speakers Invited to UCLA by the MSA

UCLA MSA consistently invites radical Muslim speakers who call for the death of Jews and even the death of America. Two such examples are Imam Abdul-Alim Musa, Imam of Masjid al-Islam in Washington, D.C. and Hatem Bazian, a university professor at Berkeley. This will become evident as their names are repeatedly mentioned in the report. In fact, the two spoke together at UCLA on January 21, 2001. Imam Musa has a long track record of making anti-American, anti-Semitic statements, and Bazian is not shy to call for the death of Jews. Bazian stated the following in May 1999:

"And the aya (passage) actually talks about the Jews entering the Masjid again and so they’d be entering again and then they’ll be defeated, in the Hadith, the Day of Judgment will never happen until you fight the Jews. They are on the West side of the river, which is the Jordan River, and you ‘re on the East side until the trees and the stones will say, Oh Muslim, there is a Jew hiding behind me. Come and kill him! And that’s in the Hadith about this, this is a future battle before the Day of Judgment."

At the January 21, 2001 event titled "Shaping Our Perspective: Our Role in a Changing World," sponsored by MSA UCLA, Imam Musa stated: "If you were to say that the Soviet Union was wiped off the face of the earth . . . people would have thought you were crazy, right? The people of Afghanistan didn’t have the intellect or historical knowledge to know that they wasn’t supposed to wipe out the Soviet Union, is that right? . . . We saw the fall of one so-called superpower, Old Sam is next."

On April 13-15, 2001 UCLA hosted the 3rd annual MSA West Conference. Among the confirmed speakers were Imam Musa and Imam Muhammad al-'Asi from Washington D.C. Imam Al-Asi, a radical anti-Semitic Shiite cleric who supports the Iranian regime and the militant Islamic movement in genera[1][4], regularly vocalizes anti-Jewish and anti-Israeli sentiment. On February 21, 2001 Muslim students at the University of California at Irvine invited Al-Asi to speak. The statement below encapsulates the virulently anti-Semitic nature of his speech:

"You have the Jews who are blind and deaf and dumb, who cannot see the same forms of racism, or discrimination, of oppression that is institutionalized and implemented by one of their own; and that is the Israeli, Zionist government in Tel Aviv… Discrimination, if it is against a gentile, is not objectionable; but anything that happens against a Jew becomes a Holocaust…Where is the courageous Jew who can come out and say Israel is as fascist as the most fascist of Europe? Israel is a racist as Apartheid could ever be."

"…In the meantime, the Zionist-Israeli lobby, referred to by the Jews themselves as the Jewish lobby in this country, is taking the United States government and the United States people to the abyss. We have a psychosis in the Jewish community that is unable to co-exist equally and brotherly with other human beings. You can take a Jew out of the ghetto, but you cannot take the ghetto out of the Jew."

Al-Asi not only vocalizes his anti-Semitic feelings, but also has vocalized anti-American sentiment as well. In 1994, Al-Asi appeared in Steven Emerson's PBS documentary Jihad in America, saying that "if the Americans are placing their forces in the Persian Gulf, we should be creating another war front for the Americans in the Muslim world -- and specifically where American interests are concentrated. In Egypt, in Turkey, in the Indian subcontinent, just to mention a few. Strike against American interests there."[1][5] In a speech at a New Black Panther Party rally carried on C-Span 2, Al-Asi said that "the twin evils in this world are the decision makers in Washington and the decision makers in Tel Aviv." He also defended Bin Laden by saying that " Israeli Zionist Jews" were behind the Sept. 11 attacks.[1][6]

Al-Talib, the UCLA Muslim Student Association publication

Al-Talib, the UCLA Muslim Student Association publication, is no exception to the anti-Jewish and anti-Israel trend that is so prevalent at UCLA. Examples below demonstrate how the writers and editors support Islamic radical groups, and even support Jihad as a means to an end. Support for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process is non-existent, as is the very recognition of Israel as a sovereign, legitimate state.

Al-Talib featured a cover story titled "The Spirit of Jihad" in their July 1999 issue

An editorial by the Al-Talib staff venerates Osama Bin-Ladin:

"When we hear someone refer to the great Mujahid (someone who struggles in Allah’s cause) Osama Bin-Ladin as a ‘terrorist’ we should defend our brother and refer to him as a freedom fighter; someone who has forsaken wealth and power to fight in Allah’s cause and speak out against oppressors. We take these stances only to please Allah."

On Sheikh Abdullah Azzam, Usama Bin Laden’s spiritual leader who extolled the virtue of "jihad and the rifle alone" as a means to an Islamic state (November 2000):

"We pray that Sheik Azzam’s dream of a true Islamic state comes true."

Al-Talib featured another cover story tilted "Philippines: the forgotten Jihad" in the September 2001 issue. In it, the author laments the "targeted distortion" of Islamic terrorist groups like Abu Sayyaf and even attempts to explain the negative distortion:

". . . Abu Sayyaf are actually beneficial for the United States because they give the United States a reason to be in the Philippines. After all, America is just helping the government get past its nasty Muslim problem, nothing else."

It is important to know that the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf, was at that time holding an American couple hostage (several of their previous hostages have been decapitated), receives material and financial assistance from Usama Bin Laden. In the same article, Bill Clinton and Madeleine Albright are referred to as "the butcher of Baghdad" and "his henchwoman," respectively.

Al-Talib, along with UC Irvine’s Muslim student newspaper, Alkalima, published a special report entitled "Zionism: The Forgotten Apartheid". The authors explain the reasoning behind this report: "As the Zionists continue to colonize, torture and ethnically-cleanse in the name of the ‘peace process’ and the Americans continue to fund them, the respective staffs of Al-Talib and Alkalima feel it to be their basic duty to expose Zionism, its evils and its effects…Zionist-controlled world media has been purposefully distorting and misconstruing world events too long."

The report has a section devoted to "the resistance movements against Zionist aggression." Hamas and Hizbollah, two of the most notorious Islamic terror organizations which have appeared on the United States’ list of designated terror groups since 1995, are lauded as heroes fighting Israeli occupation. Totally ignoring all the innocent American and Israeli blood on the hands of these terror groups, both are described as noble, quality social welfare providers.

The report also contains several articles on different subjects, all of which demonize and disparage Israel, such as:

* "Israeli" Apartheid: the chilling facts

* Zionist Torture Exposed

* Examples of "Israeli" Human Rights Violations

* "Israel’s" Nuclear Weapons: proof of their relentless terror

* Stop U.S. Foreign Aid to "Israel" Now

The February 2002 edition of Al-Talib contained an advertisement for a March 2 MSA West-sponsored event honoring "The Legacies of Hassan Al-Banna and Malcolm X." Hassan Al-Banna was the founder of the radical Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood.

In a December 19, 2001 AP article entitled "University support for alleged terrorism affiliates sparks debate", written by Don Thompson, Al-Talib publisher Mohammad Mertaban commented on the freezing of assets of Islamic charities tied to Hamas and Bin Laden:

"If it goes to families of those who have died in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I don’t see anything wrong with that. I don’t understand how people can label Palestinians terrorists."

Mertaban, when asked his views on suicide bombers in Israel, stated, ""We're in no position to condemn a suicide bombing because none of us has experienced what they've been through under 53 years of oppression."[1][7]

In an article titled "Son Takes Over, As Assad Dies After Years Of Reigning in Syria" in the June 1999 edition, the Al-Talib author refuses the existence of the State of Israel when he wrote:

"Yet with Hafez al-Assad’s death, Bashar is believed to be more intransigent to peace talks with "Israel" (Occupied Palestine), not necessarily because of additional malice towards "Israel" but because he lacks the power to make the necessary concessions with the historic enemy without earning the enmity of hard-line factions in Damascus."

Aside from their overt apologia for terrorists, over the years Al-Talib has, and continues to, print numerous anti-Jewish articles. Attached are pages from various Al-Talib issues that compare Zionism to apartheid and venerate Hamas and Hizbollah as "freedom fighting organizations."

Co-Sponsoring Events and Fundraisers for Murderers and Terror Supporters

Just two days before the events of September 11, on September 9, 2001 UCLA’s Al-Talib magazine co-sponsored a benefit dinner titled "Justice for Imam Jamil Al-Amin" at UC Irvine. Imam Al-Amin recently was convicted of murdering an Atlanta police officer while being arrested. Among the speakers were the aforementioned Imam Musa and Sheikh Hamza Yusuf, who is well known for many anti-Semitic statements which he recently recanted [1][8] At this particular event, Yusuf made the following remarks concerning the fate of America;

". . . They were ungrateful for the bounties of Allah and so Allah caused them to taste fear and hunger. That is one reason and, I would say, that this country is facing a very terrible fate. The reason for that is that this country stands condemned. It stands condemned like Europe stood condemned for what it did. . . . This country {America} unfortunately has a great, a great tribulation coming to it. And much of it is already here, yet people are too to illiterate to read the writing on the wall."

Imam Musa also voiced disparaging remarks about America, such as:

"You think Zionism and Palestine is the only dictatorial power in the world. We’re telling you about apartheid right here in America. Not an apartheid of the 1960s, but an apartheid right now today."

"When you fight Old Sam, you are fighting someone that is superior in criminality and Nazism. ‘Cause everyone knew the Nazis are criminals. Isn’t that right? They’re murderers. Superior to British colonialism. Out and out groups, huh? But the American criminalizer is the most skillful oppressor that the world has ever known."

"I don’t mean to give you a bad picture of America, I’m only giving you a realistic picture of America. I’m giving you the America that we know. Don’t say you know more about America . . ."

"Imam Jamil coined a phrase, and that phrase meant this: ‘If you don’t give us justice. If you don’t give us equality. If you don’t give us our share of America. If you don’t stay out of our way and leave us alone, we’re gonna burn America down."

"We're gonna live the American dream. We're gonna live happily ever after. But I've got news for you brother and sisters, you came to America and America is the most criminal government in the world (Allahu Akhbar) along with the Zionists. And eventually you're gonna to have to struggle here whether you like it or not."

"That's the way America survives. It is superior to-- you know British colonialism--but America is superior to British colonialism. They beat the British at everything. Isn't that right? They are a better colonizer, a better murderer, a better killer, a better liar, a better thief, a better infiltrator, than old, than old British. This is America that we know."

On March 24, 2002, shortly after Imam Al-Amin was convicted of murder, the UCLA MSA co-sponsored another event in his support. On the e-mail announcement were "many facts pointing to Imam Jamil’s innocence."

On February 10, 2001 the UCLA MSA co-sponsored another fundraiser for the Defense Fund of Ahmad Chaudhry held at Mt. San Antonio College. Chaudhry has been convicted of attempted murder for an assault on two of his college roommates in San Bernardino County. Among the speakers were CAIR’s Hussam Ayloush (mentioned and quoted further into the report).

On November 18, 2000 there was an UMMA Free Clinic Fundraising Dinner in Los Angeles at the Sequoia Conference Center. Featured speakers included Shayk Hamza Yusuf and Imam Siraj Wahaj. On the e-mail notification for the event, a UCLA student group e-mail address, umma@ucla.edu, was listed as a contact for more information.

The speaker Imam Siraj Wahaj, a member of CAIR’s Board of Advisors, was listed as a potential unindicted co-conspirator in the World Trade Center bombing case (List of unindicted persons who may be alleged as co-conspirators in United States versus Omar Ahmad Ali Abdel Rahman, Mary Jo White, US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, February 2, 1995). He is the imam of the al-Taqwa mosque in Brooklyn, where he provided a platform for Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman. He later served as a defense witness for the Sheik in the World Trade Center bombing trial. In September 1991, Wahaj stated the following:

"…And he [Allah] declared ‘Whoever is at war with my friends, I declare war on them.’ Who is a friend of Allah? [He chants a passage in Arabic] Allah. Your true friend is Allah, the messenger, and those who believe. Americans and Canadians. Hear it well. Hear what I’m telling you well. The Americans are not your friends, hear what I’m telling you, hear it well. The Canadians are not your friends, hear what I’m telling you, hear it well. The Europeans are not your friends. Your friend is Allah, the Messenger and those who believe. These people will never be satisfied with you until you follow their religion. They will never be satisfied with you…"[1][9]

Additional examples of UCLA MSA collaboration with extremist Islamic groups and individuals include:

According to UCLA’s school newspaper, the Daily Bruin, the Muslim Student Association proposed a resolution at an Undergraduate Student Association Council meeting, the text of which condemned violations of Palestinians' human rights by the Israeli government.

The resolution asked the council to take a stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Middle East. The resolution included requests that USAC "condemn political Zionism as a form of racism and racial discrimination" and "condemn the institutionalized discrimination and oppression of Palestinians by the Israeli government."

-- Daily Bruin, 5/23/01

On August 17, 2000 Ghaith Mahmoud of the Muslim Student Association West, UCLA, spoke at an anti-sanctions of Iraq rally at the Democratic National Convention. At the rally, protestors lined a narrow sidewalk through which the thousands of delegates had to pass to return to their hotels. The demonstrators lining this gauntlet chanted slogans denouncing Gore and Bush for being guilty of genocide in Iraq and racist executions in the United States.

On May 19, 2000 CAIR sponsored a lecture in Los Angeles titled "The Life of Malcolm X the Living Martyr" at the Sabiqun Store/Musalla in Palms. On the MSA e-mail announcement of the lecture, two UCLA student e-mail addresses were listed as contacts for more information: arif@ucla.edu and ashama@ucla.edu. This is a further link between CAIR and UCLA.

On May 3, 2000 the UCLA Muslim Student Association, along with CAIR, sponsored a protest of an Israeli Independence celebration at the Hollywood Palladium.

On April 9, 2000 a fundraiser for the defense of Jamil Al-Amin was held at the Culver City Veterans Memorial Complex. Once again, the contact person for more information on the e-mail announcement was the UCLA student and MSA President Ahmed Shama.

On August 27, 1999 the UCLA MSA, CAIR-Southern California, MPAC and others sponsored a Protest Against the Use of Secret Evidence in Los Angeles at the Federal Building on Wilshire. Among the speakers, yet again, were Abdul-Alim Musa and Hussam Ayloush, CAIR.

American Faces Charges in Qaeda Case
By RALPH BLUMENTHAL
Published: February 21, 2007

HOUSTON, Feb. 20 — A thin and weakened 28-year-old American who the
government says was captured last month in Kenya after joining Islamic
terrorists fighting in Somalia appeared on Tuesday in federal court
here to face charges of conspiring to use an unconventional weapon and
receiving military training from Al Qaeda.

The defendant, Daniel J. Maldonado, is a convert to Islam who grew up
in Boston before moving here. Chained, Mr. Maldonado stayed impassive
as F.B.I. witnesses and prosecutors said he had admitted to having
guarded a suspected spy who was later killed, to praising the Sept.
11, 2001, attacks and to offering himself as a suicide bomber.

The U.N.'s Elite Apologists
BY HILLEL NEUER
February 21, 2007
URL: http://www.nysun.com/article/48990

Supporting the United Nations does not require apologizing for its
abuses. Even
the New York Times conceded that last year's reform of the new U.N.
Human Rights
Council - which still includes Cuba, China, and Saudi Arabia - was an
"ugly
sham."

The former secretary-general, Kofi Annan, himself exposed the bias of
the
47-nation council - whose agenda is entirely dictated by the Islamic
bloc - and
urged it to change course.

It is baffling, then, that a senior fellow at the Century Foundation
and a
former adviser to Ted Turner's United Nations Foundation, Jeffrey
Laurenti, felt
it necessary in a recent report not only to absolve the council, but
also to
celebrate its creation - as one of the top 10 "Best in the World for
2006."
Because Mr. Laurenti is one of America's elite commentators on U.N.
affairs, his
remarks are also alarming.

"The biggest institutional overhaul to emerge from outgoing
Secretary-General
Kofi Annan's U.N. reform drive," wrote Mr. Laurenti, "was the upgrading
of the
policy body overseeing human rights to a year-round Council,
four-fifths of
whose members are bona fide democracies; the Council's nation-specific
focus on
war-fighting excesses by Israel and Sudan, however, offended the West
and
Islamists respectively."

Two Chicago men arrested on charges of planning, recruiting for "violent jihad"

Great Lakes Jihad. "Two Chicago area men arrested in Ohio terrorism case," from AP:

CHICAGO Two Chicago-area cousins are facing charges that accuse them of conspiring to commit terrorist acts against Americans overseas, including U-S military forces serving in Iraq.

Authorities say 27-year-old Zubair Ahmed of North Chicago and 26-year-old Khaleel Ahmed of Chicago were arrested today. A grand jury in Cleveland returned an indictment charging them and three others who had already been facing terrorism charges.

According to the indictment, the conspiracy included finding fresh recruits to wage "violent jihad" against Americans and locating sites for training them in the use of firearms, explosives and hand-to-hand combat.

The two cousins are both American citizens. The indictment alleges that they traveled to Cleveland in 2004 to meet with a trainer and discuss possible training in the use of weapons.

Bulgaria busts two radical Islamic Internet sites
20 February 2007 | 21:48 | FOCUS News Agency
Sofia.Bulgarian police said Tuesday they had arrested four people for publishing two Internet sites used to preach radical, violent Islam and call for the overthrow of the state, AFP reports.
"The texts published on the sites are preaching the radical form of jihad, the holy war against all non-Muslims," the interior ministry said in a statement.
It said they were also urging "Muslims around the world to assist the war against the unbelievers physically, with money and weapons."
The sites also "propagated a change of the constitutional order in the country and its substitution for the so-called sharia state."
The two men and two women arrested were part of the "Union of Muslims in Bulgaria" founded in 2006.
The authorities are investigating the sources of funding of the group and possible ties with other Islamic radicals.
Some 800,000 Muslims live in Bulgaria but most follow a moderate version of Islam.

Suicide bomber disguised as health worker wounds 3 in Afghanistan

Barbarism. "Suicide bomber targets Afghan hospital," by Amir Shah for Associated Press, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:

KABUL, Afghanistan - A suicide attacker disguised as a health worker blew himself up at a hospital opening ceremony in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, wounding at least two NATO soldiers and a hospital staffer, the provincial governor said.

Afghan security forces had blocked the attacker from approaching a crowd of about 150 people who had gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open an emergency ward at the main government hospital in the city of Khost, said Gov. Arsalah Jamal.

U.S. troops who took the man away shot him in the leg when he tried to escape. As the crowd took cover, the attacker blew himself up, Jamal said.

Young Moroccans leave to fight in Iraq

Modern, moderate Moroccans journeying to Iraq to join the jihad. By Craig Whitlock in the Washington Post via MSNBC, with thanks to Jeffrey Imm:

TETOUAN, Morocco - In the Arab world, this hilly North African city is about as far as you can get from Iraq. But for many young men here, the call to join what they view as a holy war resonates loudly across the 3,000-mile divide.

About two dozen men from Tetouan and nearby towns in the Rif Mountains have traveled to Iraq in the past 18 months to volunteer as fighters or suicide bombers, according to local residents and officials. Moroccan authorities said the men were recruited by international terrorist networks affiliated with al-Qaeda that have deepened their roots in North Africa since the invasion of Iraq four years ago.

To stanch the flow, U.S. intelligence and military officials have tried to trace the fighters' steps. On the basis of DNA evidence recovered from the scenes of suicide attacks, as well as other clues, officials have confirmed that at least two bombers came from Tetouan, a city of more than 320,000 across the Strait of Gibraltar from southern Spain.

One of them, Abdelmonaim el-Amrani, a 22-year-old laborer, abandoned his wife and infant child in Tetouan to go to Iraq. On March 6, 2006, just before sunset, he drove a red Volkswagen Passat stuffed with explosives into a funeral tent in a village near Baqubah, Iraq, according to witnesses. Six people were reported killed and 27 injured. It was months before Amrani's family in Tetouan learned of his fate from Moroccan police.

Foreign fighters in Iraq account for only a small percentage of the combatants attacking U.S. troops and their Iraqi allies. U.S. military officials and independent analysts peg the number at no more than a few thousand. But as the war drags on, it continues to serve as a powerful rallying tool for radical Islamic networks around the world that have developed recruiting pipelines as far afield as Europe and Southeast Asia.

Internet postings land students in trouble at school, with the law

Some Web sites have proved boon to investigators

Postings on the popular Web site Myspace.com have caused trouble for
several
Loveland High School students in recent weeks.

Four students were suspended after a threatening and offensive rap song
was
posted on a student's personal Myspace page.

In all, five students and a former student were issued summons for
harassment, a Class 3 misdemeanor, for their roles in the posting.
Police
said the lyrics mentioned the use of guns and named specific targets.

The case is not the first. Several questionable postings have occurred
in
the past year, including one by a 16-year-old Jefferson County resident
who
was sentenced to 18 months of probation for posing with guns on his
page.

In Colorado, it is illegal for a juvenile to possess a firearm,
although
parents can allow their children to handle one in their home. A Boulder
official also came under fire last year for a posting on his Myspace
account
that referenced his drug use and a prior arrest.

The council will meet tonight to discuss the issue and consider
guidelines
for online postings by city officials.

But the Web site, open to the public, has also been a boon to at least
one
law enforcement agency in the metro area.

"It's a tremendous information source," said Detective Bob Friel,
spokesman
for Aurora Police Department. "Certainly not everything that is on a
Web
page can be taken at face value, but it does provide additional leads
for
law enforcement."

Aurora investigators have used the Web site in cases involving fraud,
crimes
against children and homicide, Friel said.

"Several cases have been aided by a Myspace account," Friel said. "We
can
learn of somebody's circle of friends and sometimes it will lead to
more
witnesses or victims."

In the Loveland case, the person who posted the song removed it from
the
site soon after police got involved, said Sgt. Ben Hurr, police
spokesman.

The song, credited to a local Loveland band, included statements that
threatened other Loveland High students, police said. The adults issued
summonses in the case were Jonathan McEvoy, 18, and Nicholas Gagnon,
19,
police said.

The song was written in retaliation for conflicts in the high school
parking
lot between two cliques, Hurr said, but it was not gang-related.

A parent of one of the students targeted in the song called police
after
hearing it, Hurr said.

Four students involved were suspended even though the crime took place
off
school grounds because school officials said the posting had disrupted
the
day-to- day operations of the school and students' education, said Wes
Fothergill, spokesman for Thompson Valley School District.

Schools in Colorado are required to abide by the Colorado Children's
Internet Protection Act, Fothergill said.

Web sites like Myspace.com, pornography sites and game sites are
blocked
from district-owned computers, he said.

Hizbollah Admits Arms Buildup (back)

February 20, 2007

Hezbollah admitted it has resumed stockpiling arms on Lebanon ’s frontier with Israel.'We can reveal that we have arms, and of all kinds,' Hezbollah chief Sheik Hassan Nasrallah said last Friday in a speech. 'We move them covertly, and Israel does not know about it.'

Nasrallah said the smuggling would continue in defiance of Israel , foreign peacekeepers and the Lebanese army, which deployed in southern Lebanon as part of the U.N.-brokered cease-fire that ended last year’s war.

'We are not a burden to the Lebanese army but rather a supporter of its mission,' Nasrallah said.
