The networks say he will have close to 1,300 lbs of fuel left at the end, so no glide landing as they were contemplating earlier..(they can glide for up to 200 miles in an emergency without fuel)

The US pilots 14,358.02 miles beat the 12,532.28 miles set by the B-52 bomber more than four decades ago. Incorrect, Burt Rutan & Jeana Yeager flew the Voyager Aircraft 26,366 statute miles without refueling in 1986.

Not strictly incorrect, but typically sloppy reporting. Fossett isn't competing with the B-52. He's alone in a single-engine flying gastank. And I will be glad to see him do this.

You are correct, oh wise one... Burt's aircraft, but Dick was the pilot.

If he can make it to the CO-KS border under power and at
nominal cruise alt, he's probably within gliding range of
Salina, making some assumptions about the tailwind.

Exactly. Here's what AVweb reported this morining:
"Along the way he set at least one new record. Until Wednesday, the record for "distance without landing" belonged to a B-52 and it was set in 1962 (Rutan's Voyager notwithstanding ... classes, categories, engines ...). When it looked like Fossett might not complete the flight, Conference and Record Board reps got together via conference call and voted to give him the record. His first available airport after reaching the point of no return beyond Hawaii is Catalina Island."

"And I will be glad to see him do this."Why?
Seems like a bored rich guy to me. That's OK, but what is the significance to society?
