The NYT i guess does have something on it....but they are saying (after looking closely) that it was a pen....
It looks like he may have a pen in his right hand as he reaches into his jacket with his right hand. You can clearly see him arranging paper in the video on Drudge Report, shortly after pulling them from his pocket.
I think he may have consulted an illusionist to get tips before the debate.
