Why do people report these findings?

How many times have we heard someone finding gold coins only to have the feds seize it. And then, what happens when everyone in the neighborhood hears you just found 100k in cash?

"Agostini thought Kane was joking at first, but when she saw the bills inside plastic baggies, she said she 'lost it.'"

Maybe some thief hoped to be able to retrieve it at a later date. That date became later than expected.

Unfortunately for them, water did manage to work its way inside the baggies and damage the hundred dollar bills.

It's unclear if they'll be able to cash in the bills, but there is a chance that the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing will redeem their money.

If more than 50 percent of the currency is identifiable, a lawful holder of the notes 'may receive a redemption at full value,' according to the BEP website.

At that point, you take them in the bank one or two at a time and make up some excuse about how they got in that shape and ask for them to be replaced.

But telling anyone? Forget it.

Gold is a commodity. Regarding “where”, I’d say the most important part would be to do it in the US. Because with the exception of tax court, we are innocent until proven guilty. What this means is that you have no obligation to prove your innocence. Rather, an accuser must prove your guilt.

I think it would be fun to cast it into little gold bricks that look like little cars. Fortunately, gold like that is old by the ounce.

Regarding melting down rare coins, I’d rather melt it down and get a few hundred thousand or million, than find they are worth many more millions, but the government confiscates it. And there are way too many people who learned that the hard way.

But yeah, if I’m gonna find some gold, I suppose I should get a metal detector. But there are way too many square feet of real estate on the planet for me to hit it all.🤣

BTW, very few people have had this happen to them, but then, very few people have found a large stash of old or rare gold coins.

Still believe it’d be better to keep the rare gold coin and just admit you found it.
Unless it was part of the government s lost gold hoard.
Then it’s up to the government to prove it’s theirs.
I know what you’re going say, they’ve got “deeper pockets” for legal fight and you’re right.
Finding lost hoards if gold is where Europe has America beat, seems they’re finding Celtic, Norse or Roman era treasure every year.
With my luck, all I’d find is trash.
(Sighs)

It’s very easy for them to prove it. The coins were never circulated which means you’re basically in possession of stolen property.

I don’t think finding a single coin in the ground would be in mint, uncirculated condition. But I won’t badger the point.
I’m not lucky enough to find a rare gold coin anyway.😠
