Banging. Was it ... - - -...? The same code for S0S the Titanic was sending out when it went down?
Terri Schiavo lasted thirteen.
To what?
And how would you deliver air or oxygen at 400 atmospheres of pressure?
This is not your typical sub nor is it your typical depth.
It has no port.
It’s carbon fiber and titanium.
Not sure how magnetic titanium is but no go on the carbon fiber.
They’re in a submarine that is kept at atmospheric pressure.
There are no “bends”.
OceanGate sued Lochridge that year, accusing him of breaching a nondisclosure agreement, and he filed a counterclaim alleging he was wrongfully fired for raising questions about testing and safety. The case was settled on undisclosed terms several months after it was filed.
Lochridge’s concerns primarily focused on the company’s decision to rely on sensitive acoustic monitoring – cracking or popping sounds made by the hull under pressure – to detect flaws, rather than a scan of the hull. Lochridge said the company told him no equipment existed that could perform such a test on the 5-inch-thick carbon-fiber hull.
Looks like lack of full & proper hull testing may have resulted in some kind of failure.
Carbon fibre at this depth--with two tons of pressure on every square inch--may have fatally cracked.
Back in the 80s, I remember the extremely rigorous hull tests used by Electric Boat in building their submarines.
Fingers crossed that this massive rescue operation is successful.
Rescue or recovery
If they are trapped by a fishing net etc., could a robot possibly nudge the net or piece of debris away?
Several men who previously dove down to the Titanic have discussed the very real risk of getting tangled/fouled in the ship’s wreckage. The men also discussed the issue of prolonged exposure to cold temps at depth in a sub. We don’t know what has happened to the Titan sub.
How they avoid hypothermia and keep the CO2 level in tolerable range is as tough as the O2 running out.
I’m not optimistic. The sudden loss of contact halfway down is ominous.
Hamish Harding is an amazing adventurer. So many accomplishments, including accompanying Buzz Aldrin to the South Pole in 2016, and diving the Mariana Trench down to 36,000 ft.
French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet has dived to the Titanic shipwreck 35 times before this endeavor. He is known as the premier Titanic shipwreck expert.
Haven't learned much about the Pakistani father and son yet.
Several years ago a Dr. asked me if I had a fear of heights. I answered "yes", and after a few seconds thinking back to the tree-climbing days of my youth I added ... "adult onset".
We both got a good laugh out of that.
I was referring to the fact sub’s controllers have been referenced in various articles as simple video game controllers from Super Nintendo to a modified Playstation controller. The more I read about the sub, the more it scares me. To say it was built on the cheap sounds like an understatement.
True
News isn’t good.
Debris field found near Titanic wreckage site, says U.S. coast guard ( Updated 15 minutes ago )
The coast guard will be holding a news conference in Boston at 3 p.m. ET
