One problem with Hillary Clinton is that she is a Democrat, which might be off-putting to Republicans, so perhaps he should consider
Lowell Weicker, a former Republican congressman, senator and governor of Connecticut.
Weicker should be popular among conservatives because he supported Goldwater in 1964. Being a Nutmegger, he should help the GOP in New England, where it has fared poorly since the 1950's. Weicker is well-respected--he earned the Profiles in Courage award from the John F. Kennedy Foundation for ramming through a state income tax in Connecticut against the wishes of the people.
