WASHINGTON — Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.

Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.

"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

"Jim Robinson called McCain a traitorous bastard "

Well, MM, you have the head guy on the forum calling a pubbie treasonous. Kinda hard to say it can only be used against certain pubbies.

Oh FGS Jeb - I thought better of you. The subject is ILLEGAL VS LEGAL. And it would be best not to bring your wife into this considering that she has disregarded Customs laws in the past so we already know how she feels about US laws. Just govern - you are doing a decent job of that.

I never saw such a message. In any case, if it is true, then two things apply:

1. McCain was not, and has never been, a sitting President of the United States.
2. The site belongs to Mr. Robinson, so he can say whatever he likes.

I don't like the word "traitor" used against anyone, unless there is clear evidence of treason.

There's another big concern. Someone's going to come up with the bright idea that the solution is a national ID card.

I don't have a real big problem with Mexicans. I have a huge problem with "your papers please".

Mineralman owns a business and pretty much believes that the freemarket should decide everything. I could be wrong but I believe he has no problems with porn on demand, homo marriage, open borders, etc..... As his title clearly states - godless athiest.

As Forest Gump would say - A traitor is what a traitor does. Its ok for Jim Robinson to call McCain a traitor (for his McCain-Feingold bill - which was signed into law by Bush) but we can not call Bush a traitor???? Does that seem to make sense to anyone else?

Taking cheap shots at someone's kid troubles is not a valid way to win an argument, ursus.

You're disappointed with Jeb's stance on illegal immigration. Fine. We get it.

Feel better yet?

Anyway, it seems that our politicians can't come up with what it took me 5 minutes to formulate.

Yeah, but you are not a power crazy control freak with his hand out like most pols. :-)

I will call them traitors because they cheapen my citizenship. Our traitor politicians allow tens of millions of illegal aliens to jam into America to take care of their big business buddies. These worthless hacks treat American citizenship like it's a joke.

They are worse than the fools who wave Mexican flags at the recent illegal alien rallies

I don't either.

However, if JimRob is going to call McCain treasonous, I don't see how FR reasonably can in turn not allow posters to call Bush's actions treasonous - unless they say that should not apply to any pubbie. McCain has run for president and plans to run again, so he is only one notch below Bush in the GOP power structure.

Treason and Traitor may not be strong enough. I haven't heard the President say a peep about what's really going on in America.

And my wife is Russian born. She and I both hate illegal aliens. If we had to file paperwork and play by the rules, let THEM play by the damn rules and who cares who's feelings get hurt !

Thank you. I know I'm not alone. And while I treasure the opportunity that FR gives me to voice my opinion, I suppose if they ban me because they don't like what I'm saying, then that's just life.

Bush is, at the very least a traitor to his base. I like the guy and many of his policies but this issue stinks. Not only is the issue framed by the President and the Governor as pro immigration vs. anti immigration, which is not the case, but the opponents are implied xenophobes and racists. These are the same people who campaigned and donated just as much as the pro illegal group did and are now being told to "tone it down" by the Representatives they voted for.

Like it or not this issue is going to cause major problems for Republicans. Not just the issue but how those in opposition were treated by their representatives.

Import 10 million Poles, Magyars, Czechs, Russians, Latvians, Estonians, Slovenians, etc, and most white people will feel more comfortable with the immigration needed to alleviate our tight job market.

Import them illegally and we would still have similar concerns - there are about 100,000 illegal Irish immigrants in this country, for example, and they should be shown the door as well.

Oh, and it isn't about "browning" of America - my wife is a native-born citizen who is Latina and she is against all the illegal immigration. She's lived in the barrio and seen firsthand what the illegals are up to, and that has nothing do to with being Hispanic and everything to do with having an attitude that being here illegally is OK. After all, if someone is willing to not obey our immigration laws, what other laws are they willing to disregard as well? Car insurance requirements? Drug and gun smuggling? Basic housing codes?

You see all of those issues in the illegal immigrant population well in excess of the citizen population.

###

That's the end game of the Bush/Kennedy/McCain/Hillary guest worker push. The only way to track the "guests" will be a national ID card preferably implanted in your right hand or forehead.
