I've never heard that before and I believe I will never forget it. Thanks.

Expect Hannity and his ilk to raise this issue to gain ratings.

...All homeowners associations are socialistic, controlling monsters run by insecure people with no management experience....

Not all. Some are run by retired Army, Air Force or Marine colonels who love to relive their glory days by bossing around a bunch of little blue-haired ladies.

It seems to me the fine is for doing something she agreed not to do. It has nothing to do with supporting our troops.

Not an option. HOA boards meet annually.

They are LEGALLY required to meet at least once a year. However, many HOA boards meet more often than that. Our board (of which I have been a member longer than I have wanted) meets every month with the odd exception for summer months or around Christmas.

Further, the HOA members can demand a board meeting with a certain number of signatures. So, if she has enough other homeowners (and I think she did), they could have forced a meeting to discuss this topic, even if the board wasn't planning to meet.

Headline is BS. She is facing a fine for violating CID CC&R's. If she doesn't like it she can move out.

Or, failing that, put the sign inside a front window of the house. That would be inside not on the lawn outside. Let them squawk about that.

Here's a thought: They said on FOX this morning that she wouldn't take down the sign because she promised her husband she'd leave it up until he came home. I think that's a lovely gesture and I can understand her reluctance to break her promise to him. But since they DID buy a house with an HOA and because they DO have to abide by the same rules as anyone else (or next week it'll be antiwar, antiBush, peacenik-y signs), why doesn't her husband call her and tell her it's okay to take it down and let her off the hook? Just an idea, not to interject common sense into it or anything...

During the 90s I lived in an HOA-free neighborhood in Florida. It was a pretty nice place. I'm glad I didn't choose to buy about a half mile down the road, though. A couple years after I moved in the Orlando Magic came to town and one of the locals decided to show his support by painting his house in the team colors - solid black with silver and blue trim. On the sides of the house he added silver stars outlined in blue, and the names of the players in two foot high letters. "Penny! Shaq! etc."

There wasn't much his neighbors could do. Good thing he didn't have budding arsonists next door.

A few comments from one who is a member of a Florida Homeowner Association (Code Enforcement Committee) here in Orlando.

No matter what one's hot buttons are, the purpose of rules and covenants of a HO Association is to maintain property values. Signs in yards that say "We support our troops" and "Bush went to war for oil" are both equal in terms of being against code in our HO Association.

This HO Association made a grave mistake in lowering the fine to $1 a day. The next time Suzie puts up a sign in her front yard saying "Suzie Q Slut's Whorehouse Open For Business", she can use as precedent that they only charged $1 a day to this other person and not $100 a day like she is to be fined. The biggest gripe I have had about our HOA is the lack of consistency in code enforcement. Because volunteers run these things, there often is a lack of professionalism, consistency and good management.

I have always wondered where many FR members live, being that so many pounce on HOAs. I can only assume many live in the slums. Most moderate priced sub-divisions have homeowners associations. Who wants their neighborhood to fall into a degenerating slum because of lack of code enforcement?

I have another question for many of you. If you bitch about the codes that keep a sign supporting the troops from front yards, but--on the other hand--you are outraged that the Mexican flag flies in the classrooms of many inner city schools, are you being hypocritical?

Just because you (and I) support the troops, that does not make it right to allow a yard in the neighborhood to look like a flea market, and MOST homeowners are far more concerned about maintaining their property values than in having protests, demonstrations and advertising material in the yards of their neighborhood.

the woman did NOT face a fine for supporting the troops, as opposed to not supporting them.

she faced a fine for the sign, period.

extremely misleading title to the article.

Only fools live in places governed by a Homeowners Association.

Color me fool. I am selling in a (very nice) neighborhood where one person has had a friggin dump in their front year for 10 years. Code enfocement imposes fines that are worthless because the city can't collect them. I am buying in an area with a covenant that not only won't allow that, but no homeowner can have more than two dogs and they are not allowed to be kept out in the yard at night.

Color me fool because I have had enough of @ssholes that leave barking dogs out at night for hours on end and local govenment refuses to do anything about it. Color me fool because I am tired of seeing "We buy homes for cash", "Work at Home" and every other BS sign that gets shoved in the ground.

Color me fool because I am tired of teenagers that wash their cars with stadium volume music playing the entire time.

Color me fool because I get annoyed with people that leave cars continually parked in their front yard.

There are pluses and minuses to everything. Don't be too quick to judge until you've had the neighbor from hell for a few years.

I'm so glad I was successful in converting you to my point of view..../snigger

Fortunately, at least for the time being, you and I have the right to choose the neighborhood in which we wish to live. That's the important thing.

And what IF her neighbor puts up a sign saying to "Get out of Iraq! don't die for oil!" or worse?

Now what does she do?
