No driving on the weekends?

A bad move from a totalitarian-minded leftist leader in Germany is sure to give Joe Biden ideas.

Germany’s transport minister (and progressive politician), Volker Wissing, last month vowed to ban driving on weekends to meet Germany's climate-related goals. It's either do that or else he wants the ruling coalition to pass more restrictions within the Climate Protection Act come July.

According to the German newspaper BILD, as cited by Politico, Wissing penned a letter to the coalition’s parliamentary group leaders, in which he bemoaned the fact that the reforms haven’t yet been approved.

Wissing, whose initials are ironically those of Germany’s most famous auto maker told BILD, according to the Politico report that: “This serves neither the climate nor the reputation of the federal government.”

He added that reducing traffic to achieve climate goals would mandate measures such as “comprehensive and indefinite driving bans on Saturdays and Sundays.”

A government telling its citizens that they can’t drive on weekends would seem like a hard sell at best, but then again we obeyed similar — and even more intrusive — measures during the COVID pandemic lockdowns.

Personal automobiles, long a symbol of freedom and prosperity, especially in the United States, are coming under increasing attack, as are the internal combustion engines which have historically propelled them. Moreover, there is proposed legislation in the works to equip all vehicles with absolute speed governors, to make it easier for government entities to “spy” on drivers, and to even simply shut off vehicles if Big Brother doesn’t care for the way you’re driving. Etc. In many urban areas, car lanes are being pushed aside in favor of bike and foot paths. The elderly, handicapped, and infirm? The hell with them, apparently.

Ride your bike to work? No driving on the weekends?

The desired regulations were probably known before the crisis to justify them was invented.

I was stationed in Germany during the 90s. We were warned that if the government declared an “Ozone Day” traveling by automobile was restricted. We were told to have a suitcase in the car and claim we were returning home from a trip.

Normally, I’d be against ‘them’ taking away my driving on weekends, but then again, Trump is so brash that it’s probably not much of a price to pay to keep him out of office.

(right, NeverTrumpers?)

“ give Joe Biden ideas”

His idea days are long gone. He relies exclusively on his teleprompter….when he can find it.

Judging from what I had read about Germany, they were already finding good cause to back away from the “new green climate controls” & go back to energy sources that had actually worked. Of course that would not necessarily stop some idiot (just as in this country) from dreaming up more impossible ideas to promote “green energy”. Not driving on weekends would not go over well in either of our countries, I think.

You’ll walk on weekends, you’ll eat bugs, there will be no steak because all the cows will be dead while the ruling elite eats fillet mignon and caviar.

Save that fuel! You will need it to go to work and pay your tax bill to the Fuhrer!

Not to mention the people whose livelihoods require weekend work, eg musicians, artists, bartenders, waitresses, amusement park employees, etc.

My guess is this legislation has zero chance of getting passed and VW is pandering and campaigning. But then it IS Deutschland and whenever you want to summon a demon you must play German techno music.

None of this is leading toward anything other than extremely ugly times ahead.

If their customers can’t get there by car, these employees will no longer be needed, comrade.

Whatever the new law or regulation, the goal always remains the same: the liquidation of the kulaks/bourgeoisie.

Indeed Climate Protection Acts is the only tool required to achieve it.

It covers everything needed

My wife and I enjoyed a Danube River cruise a year before Covid-19 came along and disrupted our international travel. I was not aware that Germany banned truck travel on the Autobahn from midnight Saturday ‘til midnight Sunday. Only trucks transporting perishable goods (reefers) are excepted. Not sure if this is ozone related or not ... or just a courtesy to automobile drivers.

Germany is proposing no driving on weekends in order to reduce CO2 emissions and meet their emissions agenda

(From the article) : " ..Personal automobiles, long a symbol of freedom and prosperity, especially in the United States, are coming under increasing attack,
as are the internal combustion engines which have historically propelled them.
Moreover, there is proposed legislation in the works to equip all vehicles with absolute speed governors, to make it easier for government entities to “spy” on drivers,
and to even simply shut off vehicles if Big Brother doesn’t care for the way you’re driving. Etc.
In many urban areas, car lanes are being pushed aside in favor of bike and foot paths.
The elderly, handicapped, and infirm? The hell with them, apparently."

"Ride your bike to work? No driving on the weekends?"

Remember the commercial song :" See the USA in your Chevrolet " ? It really wasn't all that long ago
That's what weekends are designed to do: relax from the work experience, enjoy activities with family, visit family elsewhere, go to religious activities, and renew family ties.
Weekend travel is essentially escapism from the same old work drudgery day in and day out, and allows for relaxation and happiness .
One would have thought that a lesson of the lock downs from the Covid social epidemic would have made government more responsive to the needs of the people.
I guess that's not true in Germany where this proposal is being made.
The government politicians may want the people to live in drudgery and monotony
What say you ?
