A local high school is being sued by a black student over a longstanding student tradition known as "Wigger Wednesday." Quera Pruitt, a former Red Wing High School student, says seeing her white classmates don do-rags and saggy jeans while throwing gang signs on "Wigger Wednesday" is a form of racial discrimination. "To her, and frankly to me, 'Wigger Day' is the same thing as 'Nigger Day,'" says her attorney, Joshua Williams.

The lawsuit said 60 to 70 students were involved in the activity during the 2008 and 2009 school years. Red Wing is about 50 miles southeast of Minneapolis along the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. The high school has about 880 students, and their racial composition is 89 percent white, 4 percent Hispanic, 3 percent black, 3 percent American Indian and 1 percent Asian, according to the Minnesota Department of Education. Catholic Citizens of Illinois (www.catholiccitizens.org), a lay organization of Roman Catholics who support the teachings of the Catholic Church, is calling on Francis Cardinal George to remove Rev. Michael Phleger as pastor of St. Sabina's immediately. Phleger's tirades are racist and there's nothing Catholic about them. A few years ago, Phleger threatened to start a new church rather than be re-assigned. He has started a new church, but on Archdiocese of Chicago property. Phleger's scandalous conduct is shameful and an embarrassment to the Catholic Church.
