MADISON – With Wisconsin facing extreme cold temperatures that have closed schools and governments across the state, the Government Accountability Board will provide a one day extension to those entities that close on January 7th. A memorandum obtained from the Government Accountability Board says that if in the event a government or school district is ordered to be closed by an authorized official that the day would be considered a holiday. Therefore, the filing deadline becomes Wednesday January 8th by 5:00 PM. For candidates running for school board, the only way that the extension would be applied is if the...

  • Eight Botched Environmental Forecasts

Predicting the weather -- especially a decade or more in advance -- is unbelievably challenging. What's the track record of those most worried about global warming? Decades ago, what did prominent scientists think the environment would be like in 2010? 1. Within a few years "children just aren't going to know what snow is." Snowfall will be "a very rare and exciting event." 2. "[By] 1995, the greenhouse effect would be desolating the heartlands of North America and Eurasia with horrific drought, causing crop failures and food riots…[By 1996] The Platte River of Nebraska would be dry, while a continent-wide...

LANSING, MI -- Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is urging residents to exercise great caution as dangerous winter weather sweeps across the state. "The heavy snowfall and expected 20-year low subzero temperatures and high winds are creating – or have the potential to create – hazardous conditions across most of the state," Snyder said in a release Sunday afternoon. "We want everyone to be safe. Let's all pull together by taking care of ourselves and each other, which includes checking in on friends and neighbors who may need our help. It’s times like this when Michiganders are at their best." The...

Experts have warned that Friday's freezing temperatures were simply a warm-up and that this weekend will bring a big chill for 140 million people - almost half the nation - that could prove fatal for the unprepared - and will continue through the winter. With the Northeast still reeling from the huge storm that dumped as much as two-feet of snow across the region and was responsible for the deaths of 16 people, a new weather system is threatening to bring record low temperatures to the Midwest as a polar vortex barrels over the United States. 'It's the mother lode...

Northeast residents are bracing for a cold welcome to 2014 due to a winter storm predicted to bring snow and frigid temperatures across much of the region. Though snow began falling overnight in parts of New England and New York, forecasters say the full storm would not hit until later Thursday. As much as a foot of snow or more was forecast for some areas overnight Thursday into Friday, and temperatures were expected to plummet, with some areas seeing highs just above zero, the National Weather Service said. "There will be travel problems," said Hugh Johnson, a National Weather Service...

Before NASA and NOAA start tampering with the data, 2013 is one of the ten coldest years since 1895, and has had the largest year over year decline on record. NOAA of course won’t talk about this, and will massively tamper with the data before releasing it. The graph below is the yearly average of all daily high and low temperatures at all NOAA USHCN stations.

Dog Helps Alaska Woman Survive 3 Nights in Cold ANCHORAGE, Alaska December 13, 2013 (AP) By DAN JOLING Associated Press Associated Press A woman survived nearly three nights in bitter interior Alaska cold by burning her snowmobile and huddling with her small dog, Alaska State Troopers said Thursday. Vivian Mayo, 57, of Cantwell, was found at about 1 a.m. Wednesday, taking shelter under the burned-out hulk of her snowmobile and sharing body heat with Elvis, a small, brown dog of unknown breed. She was severely hypothermic and in need of immediate medical attention, troopers said. Megan Peters, spokeswoman for the...

Normally, one could get your local forecast by entering your city/state or zip code. This only works for some places such as "Lake Charles, LA" (which has a weather center with radar) but not for "Lafayette, LA". It is unclear if it a "database" issue or what the problem with this website. But if you go to the main site (www.weather.gov), one will notice items missing that are normally there (Drought Monitor, December-January-February Forecast) as well as the local forecast webpage.

A biting Winter storm has blasted the South and Midwest with ice and snow - leaving more than a quarter of a million people without power, grounding hundreds of flights and causing treacherous conditions for travelers. Two people have died in traffic accidents on roads in Texas, where temperatures plunged below freezing on what residents dubbed 'Ice Friday'. Schools in the state canceled classes as temperatures plunged below freezing and thousands of shoppers jammed stores to buy milk, pet food and other supplies. A quarter of a million Dallas residents are without power as well as 35,000 people in Arkansas....

A swath of ice and a wintry mix later this week threatens to slow travel and cut power from parts of Texas to Kentucky. As dangerous cold sweeps southward and eastward over the Plains and Midwest in the wake of a North Central states snowstorm, it will set up a weather pattern favoring a narrow zone of freezing rain, sleet and some snow late this week.
