As many of you that visit this channel know, the Jehovah's Witness religion does not allow people to have freedom of thought and belief. If a person changes their viewpoint and questions the JW hierarchy and leadership then they will be sanctioned. If a member adopts an "unacceptable" opinion or conviction and dares to speak of it, then the local religious leaders (called Elders) will come after them, using an iron fist in a velvet glove to bring them back in line. If that fails, then they will cut the person off and ostracize them before everyone, announcing them from...

Jehovah’s Witnesses accept the existence of authority in the early Church, but reject apostolic succession and fail to provide the link between their claim to authority today and the Apostles. But why do they reject apostolic succession? To find out, let us take a look at the Witnesses’ handbook for door-to-door proselytizing called Reasoning from the Scriptures, in which they both provide their definition of a particular topic and put on the handy line “Not a Bible teaching”, if they disagree with a particular idea. Apostolic SuccessionDefinition: The doctrine that the 12 apostles have successors to whom authority has been...

Our house has become a frequent stop for the Jehovah’s Witnesses. More than likely it is because my beautiful wife smiles, listens, and takes their literature. Her feeling has always been that it is better for us to take The Watchtower than to have it in the hands of someone else. At any rate, I rarely read it, but the subtitle on the front cover this month was, “What Are the Marks of the True Christianity?â€Â I’ve always known that, like Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses consider themselves “Christians†but the rest of Christendom does not for lack of their profession...

I used to spend a lot of time on the subject of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. It was the second major group I tackled and studied. I still have a huge number of their old, old books, shelves of them, actually. I also have a whole set of what are called "bound volumes," yearly compilations of all of the Watchtower and Awake! magazines. Of course, much of this is now available digitally on the Watchtower Library CD Rom (which isn't easy to get hold of, but not impossible). Anyway, I just checked the dark corner of one of...

Since its inception in 1881, the Watchtower Bible and Tract society, A.K.A. Jehovah’s Witnesses, has proclaimed that only 144,000 human beings will go to heaven. They get that number, of course, from Revelation 14:1-5, where we read that they are those who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are chaste; it is these who follow the Lamb wherever he goes; these have been redeemed from mankind as first fruits for God and the Lamb, and in their mouth no lie was found, for they are spotless. They are identified as “male virgins†who have not defiled themselves with...

By Joel Meares It’s the first Saturday of March and a perfect day for Jehovah’s Witnessing. The sky is clear, the air is crisp and a fresh copy of The Watchtower, stamped March 1, 2010, is ready to be distributed. At least, I assume it’s a good day for Witnessing; this is my first time. Frank and Lydia Tavolacci — from a Jehovah’s Witness congregation in Glendale, Queens — have invited me along for a morning of door-knocking in their mostly residential neighborhood. A longtime recipient of the Witnesses’ famous “good news” wakeup calls, I jumped at the chance to see...

Truth in Translation: Grading the Professor05/29/2008 - Mike Porter Not too long ago, this ministry received some emails regarding a small work that had been handed or otherwise recommended to them by members of the Jehovah's Witnesses. The book was concerning to them for a couple of reasons: 1) It was written by a man claiming to be a biblical scholar who was, above all, a neutral observer and evaluated several translations to determine bias and fairness. 2) Among the translations he evaluated was the New World Translation of the Jehovah's Witnesses and, despite finding some flaws with it,...

Centuries-old watchtower found in Trondheim Archaeologists in Trondheim have found the remains of what they believe was a watchtower made of stone, probably dating from the time of King Sverre in the 1100s.Here's a drawing of the tower believed to have been at least five stories tall. Archaeologist Ian Reed says the tower's floor is in good shape. The tower was located near the mouth of the river Nidelv, at lower left. The tower, which may have been more than 20 meters high, is being called an "incredibly rare discovery" that can shed new light on Trondheim's history. Preservation experts...

Folks, the table I shared with you a couple of days back, documenting the different anti-Trinitarian heresies, the time of their birth, and the people and events leading their rebuttal and condemnation as false teaching, had become a piece of conversation in here. One user observed that nowhere in the authorities in favor of the Trinity do we find "the Bible" and that's because the Trinity, so he said, is a heretical, devil-inspired concept foreign to Scripture and the Truth, or words to that effect. I suppose that he was talking about the second two tables because the first one...

Testifying against his father, Leon Slack whipped a piece of electrical cord across a bed frame in the courtroom. The cord, he said, was like the one his father used to beat Slack's sister to death. Jurors watched as Slack repeatedly slapped the cord, demonstrating how he said his father struck his sister more than 100 times after she was tied to the same frame in November 2001. Laree Slack had screamed out, her brother said, but their father, Larry Slack, stuck a towel in her mouth to muffle her.
