Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to have it his way with New York's fast-food industry — and restaurant owners aren't loving it. Franchise owners say they're considering a lawsuit against Cuomo's plan to raise the minimum wage in their eateries to $15 an hour, arguing that it is not fair or legal to be saddled with such a significant increase in labor costs that won't apply to retail, landscaping, child care or other traditionally low-wage industries. "Singling out fast food restaurants while ignoring other industries that hire workers who are paid under $15 is unfair and discriminatory, harms New York workers,...

Trump is resonating with Americans, especially the so-called “silent majority,” by speaking bluntly about illegal immigration, and Levin also had some politically incorrect points to make on the subject. While listening to Breitbart News Sunday, Levin said he was particularly bothered by the claim—made by politicians on both sides of the aisle—that there are so many so-called “jobs that Americans will not do.” Levin mentioned that, according to the Census, 73% of janitors are American citizens, as are 51% of maids and housekeepers, 58%of taxi drivers, 64% of landscapers, 66% of construction workers, and 72% of bellhops, porters, and concierges....

We are now half way through the calendar year, and for many that means mid-year performance reviews. Or even worse, for some with odd fiscal years, it can be time for talks about money. Both inside and outside of those meetings what you have been told can be confusing. You need to understand what your boss really means, not just what is said. Believe me, I’ve spent enough time in corporate America, and enough time in human resource jobs, to know the difference. This stuff applies whether you work for a massive multinational like Google , or General Motors GM...

This is exactly what the left pushed for… Fast food chains were never meant to be a place for someone to raise a family of 6, they were to be part time positions with some full-time advancements. Mostly the fast food restaurants were for school aged kids to learn how to interact with people, with a job, to offer spending money, and to begin responsibility learning for their future.

...Not all that long ago, Gap, Inc. was among the retailers the White House praised for participating in their #RaiseTheWage push:...Obama even visited a Gap store in March of last year to thank them for doing as Democrats instructed.....Let’s check out how that’s coming along just over a year later:

As part of the negotiations to get Proposal 1 on the May 5 ballot, Gov. Rick Snyder reportedly promised to veto a potential repeal of the state's “prevailing wage” law. This law prohibits awarding government construction contracts to the lowest bidder, unless the contractor pays the equivalent of union wages that often exceed market rates. Studies have shown that this adds hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the cost of government infrastructure projects, including school construction and road repairs. Snyder has not denied those reports, and even though voters turned down the proposed sales tax hike in May, there...

As New York Governor Anthony Cuomo fast-tracks his arbitrary wage increase targeting the state’s fast food industry, scarce attention has been given to the actual language in the proposal. Cuomo, of course, hastily created the Fast Food Wage Board soon after an error-ridden op-ed appeared in the New York Times. The non-legislative board held its first meeting last week as it determines an "adequate" wage for fast food workers in the Empire State. Acting Labor Commissioner Mario Musolino, who is overseeing the three-member kangaroo court, set forth a definition to guide its efforts. Musolino has said that “fast food chains”...

The overlord of overtime. Obama set to use sneaky administrative maneuver to force huge wage increaseHis cheerleaders at the worst web site in the world call it “the most ambitious government intervention on wages in a decade,” and since this is the Obama Administration we’re talking about, you surely won’t be surprised to know it’s happening without any involvement from Congress. Barack Obama isn’t going to get Congress to pass a statutory increase in the minimum wage, but he’s very skilled at finding ways to push executive authority to the legal limit - or beyond - to accomplish goals he...

A pizza shop owner in Seattle says the city's new minimum wage law is forcing her to close her doors. The new law says businesses have six years to phase into giving employees $15 an hour. Devin Jeran was happy to get a raise when Seattle's minimum wage went up to $11 an hour at the beginning of the month. “I definitely recognize that having more money is important, especially in a city as expensive as this one,” he said. He'll only enjoy that bigger paycheck for a few more months. In August, his boss is shutting down Z Pizza,...

Believe it or not there is actual evidence that illegal immigration does depress wages for the native-born but you are not likely to hear about it in the multitude of classes that touch on various “diasporas.” “In studies at meat-packing plants, when illegal immigrants are taken out, wages went up,” Professor Philip Cafaro pointed out in a panel discussion at the National Press Club last Thursday sponsored by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS). Cafaro teaches philosophy at Colorado State University in Fort Collins. He has amassed a multitude of research on the subject, much of it on display in...

Guess what? This isn’t a low-wage job recovery. Listen to the media, and you might think that the only kind of jobs being created are in fast-food restaurants and retail chains. It turns out that this is wildly misleading and that the economy’s employment profile — the split between high- and low-paying jobs — hasn’t changed much since the recession or, indeed, the turn of the century. Put differently, the share of high-wage jobs is just below one-third of all employment, roughly where it was in 2000 and 2007 — the last year before the financial crisis. Similarly, the share...

Michigan’s “prevailing wage” law costs residents more than $224 million each year, according to the Anderson Economic Group. Now there’s a website that brings the impact of that even closer to home. Created by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Michigan, the new site, www.TimeForRepeal.com/waste-calculator/, lets people learn the cost of prevailing wage mandates for individual school districts. ABC of Michigan, which represents commercial, governmental and industrial construction industries, has consistently advocated for eliminating the state’s prevailing wage law, which essentially requires construction firms doing work for the government to pay union scale wages and follow union work rules....

There are millions of low-wage immigrant workers across the United States who make life easier for professionals in various ways. These immigrants prepare and serve meals, clean homes and offices, care for children and aging parents and grandparents, drive passengers to and fro, and, among many other things, clean, trim, and paint nails. Over the past few days, Sarah Maslin Nir’s two-part report in the New York Times on labor conditions in America’s burgeoning manicure industry has attracted a great deal of attention, and for good reason. Nir’s work is a powerful reminder that low-wage immigrant workers aren’t always treated...

...After seeing CNN's story Friday on Charles Gladden -- a man who works in the Senate cafeteria but lives on the streets -- Nathan Morris, the co-founder of musical group Boyz II Men, started an online call to arms to help. Using a crowd-funding site "Go Fund Me," Morris urged people to make a donation to help Gladden find housing.... ...Gladden, 63, makes about $11 an hour, and takes home about $360 a week. But he said he gives a lot of it to his children and grandchildren, who have their own financial troubles. "I take care of them," he...

A survey targeting local low-income families has found that 40 percent of respondents felt they have very little or no job security, according to results being released this week. That kind of instability makes it challenging to commit to car loans, apartment leases and tuition payments – steps often necessary to improving a family’s economic standing. Of those participating in the survey, more than 1 in 2 has received free groceries or meals and about 1 in 4 has needed help with housing, utilities or health care. The 502 responses reflect the experiences of those who continue to struggle in...

Wages of America's middle class have dropped below 1970s levels as immigration has surged 325 percent, according to a new congressional report that questions claims that native Americans are economically helped by greater immigration. The nonpartisan Congressional Research Service report studied immigration and middle class income from 1945-2013 and found that as immigration slowed between 1945 and 1970, American incomes increased. But when immigration expanded, the incomes of the bottom 90 percent of Americans went flat and then dropped beginning in 2000. In the report to the Senate Judiciary Committee, the CRS reported that the foreign-born population of the United...

Ever since Scott Walker began engaging on the national stage, he’s been dogged by questions about his policies on immigration. The Wisconsin governor admits that his position has changed from a few years ago, a change he attributes to having more opportunity to study the issue now that the cycle of elections in Wisconsin has finally played all the way out. Still, Walker has had some trouble defining the issue in a way that makes him stand out from the field.Did he succeed last night? In an interview with Sean Hannity, Walker said that immigration policy should have as...

Friday, the Labor Department is expected to report the economy added 247,000 jobs in March down from 295,000 in February and 324,000 during the fourth quarter. Wages, for all but the most skilled professionals, continue to advance only slowly, and going forward good paying jobs and pay raises will likely be even scarcer for struggling middle and working class Americans. The headline unemployment rate is down to 5.5 percent, from the recession high of 10, largely because fewer adults are participating in the labor force—for example, the 7 million men ages 25 to 55 that neither have a job nor...

Shanna Tippen was another hourly worker at the bottom of the nation’s economy, looking forward to a 25-cent bump in the Arkansas minimum wage that would make it easier for her to buy diapers for her grandson. When I wrote about her in the Post last month, she said the minimum wage hike would bring her a bit of financial relief, but it wouldn’t lift her above the poverty line. She called me the other day to say she didn’t get to enjoy the 25-cent hike for long. After the story came out, she says she was fired from her...
