Ann Coulter offered more mean-spirited commentary in her latest Universal Press Syndicate column posted Wednesday night. In a Q&A with herself, Coulter asked: "How would your career be different if you looked like [liberal Creators Syndicate columnist] Molly Ivins?" Coulter answered: "I'd be a lot uglier." The conservative Universal columnist also called New York Times Executive Editor Bill Keller "(a) a complete moron or (b) a traitor," and said the "mainstream press is in economic trouble" because of "hysterical leftism that drove readers away." First, this is NOT an April Fool's joke. I am leaving Free Republic. Over the past two years, civility and thoughtful discourse has vanished from this site, replaced with demands for ideological conformity that are straight out of Stalinist Russia or China's Great Cultural Revolution, and unrelenting uncivility if said conformance is not forthcoming. This trend began with the California recall election, where certain posters were allowed to flame the living beejezus out of those who didn't wholeheartedly support Tom McClintock, or thought that he wasn't running a campaign capable of winning. <p>The Republican National Committee - and, by implication, the White House - is running a TV commercial defending President Bush's handling of the Iraq War, saying Democrats are attacking him "for attacking the terrorists." Not really. It's for doing such a bad job of it. This despicable attempt to muffle criticism by throwing the flag over it may or may not work. But it does not change the fact that America went into Iraq for reasons that now appear specious and so distantly related to the war on terrorism that the connection seems merely rhetorical. Saddam Hussein lives, and Osama Bin Laden lives. And yet, somehow, the Bush White House wants nothing but congratulations.</p>
