Hinckley allowed unsupervised visits 1 hour, 19 minutes ago By Kevin Johnson, USA TODAY John Hinckley, the man who shot President Reagan in a failed assassination attempt more than two decades ago, will be allowed to leave the mental hospital grounds for a series of unsupervised visits with his parents, a federal judge ruled Wednesday. Over the objections of the federal government, the Reagan family and the former president's press secretary who was badly wounded in the 1981 attack, U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman concluded that Hinckley, 48, no longer posed a danger and that all the medical evidence weighed...

Loaded down with several dozen pages of homework from her third-grade teacher, Zaira Ayala left California for Mexico early this month, two weeks before the official beginning of winter break. The eight-year-old is one of several hundred students from the Napa Valley who are in Mexico right now, missing school to be with grandparents and great-grandparents who live far away. Going to Mexico in December is a longstanding tradition for many farmworker families in the Napa Valley, originating from the cycle of the grape harvest, which doesn't provide year-round jobs for everyone. Zaira's father, Rafael Ayala, is a 51-year-old fieldworker...

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- A woman who locked her 3-year-old daughter in the trunk of a car while she visited her husband in prison has been charged with endangerment. Tammy Denise Swittenburg-Edwards, 31, was arrested Saturday at a state prison about 95 miles east of Pittsburgh after prison guards heard crying and yelling from the vehicle and found the girl in the trunk, state police said. Swittenburg-Edwards apparently locked her in after prison officials refused the child's entry because she wasn't on a visitor's list, state police said. The girl was in the trunk for about 40 minutes while Swittenburg-Edwards visited...

Schröder snubs France to visit UK (Filed: 25/09/2002) Break with post-election tradition indicates loosening of Franco-German ties to Blair's advantage, writes Toby Helm Chancellor Gerhard Schröder signalled a loosening of Franco-German ties - and a strengthening of those with Britain - when he broke with tradition last night to visit Tony Blair on his first foreign trip since his re-election. His decision to travel to London for talks with the Prime Minister marked a departure from the normal practice under which the German leader meets the French president immediately after an election victory. Thomas Matussek, the German ambassador to London,...
