As it had long planned, the U.S. Marine Corps has successfully fired a 227mm GPS-guided rocket from the flight deck of a ship during an annual exercise in the Pacific region, nicknamed Dawn Blitz 2017. Something we at The War Zone have highlighted many times in the past, this combination could offer an important new capability for traditional amphibious operations, more limited contingencies, and even possibly operations further out at sea. Marines of the 5th Marine Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment conducted the mock fire support mission with a truck-mounted M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) while on board the...

Today years of home schooling and teaching honor, duty and love for country came to fruition. My two oldest sons Marshall (19) and Mitchell (18) left for MCRD San Diego. These are two fine young Christian men who have never gave their mother or I any real trouble or grief. They have never so much as back talked us. It was a proud moment for us as we watched them take the oath to protect the Constitution of the United States. Neither of them were looking for a career they just wanted to do what they felt was a duty...

I had the privilege to serve with the finest Americans, the U.S. Marine Corps, from 1979 until 1990. These fine Americans included people you've never heard of like Pat Guigerre, Jeff Sharver, and Jeb Seagle, who gave their lives to provide NFL players the freedom to make an issue of themselves. To demonstrate their feelings of concern about this horrible racist nation – at least according to their own delusions – they must have the courage and patriotism to disrespect the symbols of their freedom during a football game and not on their own personal time. Keep in mind that...

Just wanted to share this... My friend, and former roommate, will be on Fox and Friends First and on Fox and Friends tomorrow to weigh in on the NFL controversy. A little background on this guy, a retired USMC colonel (led one of the first light armored divisions into Kuwait during Dessert Storm). Tough as nails... and quite outspoken. When we were plebes together in military school, some officer came into our room, sat on his bed and leaned his head on the flag Jeff had on the wall. He threatened to break the officer's head if he didn't move....

For the first time in its 250-year history, a woman will be joining the ranks of the Marine Corps as an infantry officer, the U.S. military said Thursday. The lieutenant, whose name was not revealed, is expected to graduate from the grueling, 13-week infantry officer course Monday, the training center said in a statement released to The Washington Post. ABC News confirmed the historic first. Three dozen women have attempted to complete the course, and all but one have failed. About 25 percent of all trainees do not complete the course. The Pentagon opened up all ground combat roles in...

Yasue and Tatsuya’s sister Sayoko Furuta, 93...covered her face with both hands and wept silently as Tatsuya placed the flag on her lap. ... The flag’s white background is filled with signatures of 180 friends and neighbors in this tea-growing mountain village of Higashishirakawa, wishing Yasue’s safe return. In 2013, the US military lifted its ban on women serving in combat. Shortly after, the Marine Corps began what it calls an “unprecedented research effort” to understand the impact of gender integration on its combat forces. That took the form of a year-long experiment called the Ground Combat Element Integrated Task Force, in which 400 Marines — 100 of them female — trained for combat together and then undertook a simulated deployment, with every aspect of their experience measured and scrutinized. All branches of the military faced a January 1, 2016 deadline to open all combat roles to women,...

US miliary officials have effectively confirmed they don't expect to find three Marines missing after their aircraft crashed off Queensland's coast alive and say recovery attempts could drag on for months. Authorities on Sunday suspended search and rescue operations less than 24 hours after their aircraft crashed off Queensland's coast while trying to land. The US Navy and Marine Corp - with help from the Australian Defence Force - are now focusing their efforts on salvage and recovery, which they warn could take several months. The three missing marines' next-of-kin have been notified, the Marine base Camp Butler in Japan...

"Please don't mention my son," he asked the Marine Corps officer introducing him. Four days earlier, 2nd Lt. Robert M. Kelly , 29, had stepped on a land mine while leading a platoon of Marines in southern Afghanistan. He was killed instantly. At 6:10 a.m. on Nov. 9, Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., one of Kelly's oldest and dearest friends, rang the doorbell at his home in the Washington Navy Yard. The instant Kelly saw Dunford, dressed in his service uniform, he knew Robert was dead. His wife, Karen, was still asleep. "I then did the most difficult thing I've...
