Catherine Corless’s research revealed that 796 children died at St Mary’s. She now says the nature of their burial has been widely misrepresented In light of Corless’s article a Children’s Home Graveyard committee was established last year. In recent months its secretary, Teresa Killeen Kelly, addressed the congregation after Mass at Tuam Cathedral, explaining the work of the committee and asking for donations towards a plaque. Copies of Corless’s article were handed out. As John Lowe, another member of the committee, explained this week at the site of the former home, the group’s aim is to raise €15,000 for a...

In a town in western Ireland, where castle ruins pepper green landscapes, there’s a six-foot stone wall that once surrounded a place called the Home. Between 1925 and 1961, thousands of “fallen women” and their “illegitimate” children passed through the Home, run by the Bon Secours nuns in Tuam. Many of the women, after paying a penance of indentured servitude for their out-of-wedlock pregnancy, left the Home for work and lives in other parts of Ireland and beyond. Some of their children were not so fortunate. More than five decades after the Home was closed and destroyed — where a...

A bill presented in the House would allow the adoption of a child to take place without the consent of the father, if he has not previously developed a consistent and substantial relationship with the child. The definition of “consistent and substantial relationship,” has not been specifically defined in Missouri law. The bill seeks to express clearly the actions a father must take to develop a consistent and substantial relationship. Unless actively thwarted from doing so by the mother, the father must provide: Consistent prenatal financial support Payment of prenatal and natal medical care for the mother and baby Child...

The scandal and heartache of teen pregnancy has been exploited by producers of popular prime-time TV, who have made stories of 16-year-olds stumbling through accelerated adolescence into marketable drama. Likewise, news media have scrutinized the teen birth phenomenon for some time. The truly shocking and underreported story, however, is that of unmarried 20-something parents. While 21 percent of children born outside of marriage are to teen mothers, more than 60 percent of unwed births occur to women in their 20s. It is not the young girls studying for the SAT or fretting over their prom prospects that make up the...

*** The black community's 72 percent rate eclipses that of most other groups: 17 percent of Asians, 29 percent of whites, 53 percent of Hispanics and 66 percent of Native Americans were born to unwed mothers in 2008, the most recent year for which government figures are available. The rate for the overall U.S. population was 41 percent. This issue entered the public consciousness in 1965, when a now famous government report by future senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan described a "tangle of pathology" among blacks that fed a 24 percent black "illegitimacy" rate. The white rate then was 4 percent....

"I want to create a new electoral math. I don't want to practice division, I want to practice addition.'' -Obama While new math may have been a dismal failure in public schools, Obama’s electoral new math has succeeded stupendously for him. It led to his victory in Iowa over Hillary and eventually to the White House. He wanted additional voters and he got them. For example, when the time came to caucus in Iowa, over half the attendees were first timers who mainly supported Obama. As a strategy, it was laughable. Think George McGovern. It was a desperate ploy from...

SAVANNAH, Ga. – An Army cook and single mom may face criminal charges after she skipped her deployment flight to Afghanistan because, she said, no one was available to care for her infant son while she was overseas. Spc. Alexis Hutchinson, 21, claims she had no choice but to refuse deployment orders because the only family she had to care for her 10-month-old son — her mother — was overwhelmed by the task, already caring for three other relatives with health problems.

A recent U.S. Bureau of Census report indicates that 40% of unwed births in the U.S. in 2007 were out of wedlock. In California that percentage was 41.1%. What the press failed to report however is that Latinos represented 65%, or about two thirds, of all the unwed births in California. As a category, Whites came in a distant second at nearly 19%. See retabulated U.S. Census data below: California Unwed Births 2007 Total Unwed Births: 232,966 Total Wed & Unwed Births: 566,352 Unwed Births: Latino 151,440 65.1% White 43,660 18.7% Black 22,879 9.8% Asian 12,630 5.4% American Indian 2,357...

The day before McCain surprised the nation with his pick of Sarah Palin as his running mate, I had a ‘discussion’ with a woman I have known for many years. Although well into the “gifted” range (so called “genius“ ) she has a penchant for choosing political losers! She is a walking talking example that IQ and common sense do not necessarily follow the same ark. I had once argued, that if I were President, I would put her on my staff as a reverse barometer; I would do the opposite of whatever course of action she would suggest I...

NEW YORK - Divorce and out-of-wedlock childbearing costs U.S. taxpayers more than $112 billion a year, according to a study commissioned by groups advocating government action to bolster marriage.

Divorce and unwed childbearing cost taxpayers at least $112 billion each year or more than $1 trillion over the last decade. This estimate from the Institute for American Values is, as the authors suggest, likely to be an underestimate. This staggering but plausible tally of the economic costs of family dissolution follows what we have long known about the social costs. All our major social ills -- poverty, violent crime, substance abuse, truancy and more -- are more closely linked to family breakdown and single-parent homes than to any other factor. A poor black child from an intact home is...

NEW YORK — Divorce and out-of-wedlock childbearing cost U.S. taxpayers more than $112 billion a year, according to a study commissioned by four groups advocating more government action to bolster marriages. Sponsors say the study is the first of its kind and hope it will prompt lawmakers to invest more money in programs aimed at strengthening marriages. Two experts not connected to the study said such programs are of dubious merit and suggested that other investments — notably job creation — would be more effective in aiding all types of needy families. There have been previous attempts to calculate the...

DENVER -- A Colorado Springs lawmaker referred Wednesday to unmarried, pregnant teenagers and the fathers as "sluts" who should be made to feel ashamed for their lack of morals. Rep. Larry Liston’s remarks were made during a discussion with health care professionals at a Republican legislative caucus lunch about Colorado’s high teen pregnancy rate. "In my parents' day and age, (unmarried teen parents) were sent away, they were shunned, they were called what they are," Colorado Springs Republican Rep. Larry Liston said during the meeting in Denver. "There was at least a sense of shame." "I think it’s wrong. They’re...

Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, had a way with words. In 1922, she wrote a book chapter titled "The Cruelty of Charity." Charity toward the poor, especially toward poor immigrants, she opined, only "encourages the healthier and more normal sections of the world to shoulder the burden of unthinking and indiscriminate fecundity of others, which brings with it … a dead weight of human waste."

Unwed parents are being seduced into wedlock by a New York writer fighting to reverse an anti-marriage trend. Author Maryann Reid is tempting couples with kids to take the plunge in a high-profile, all-expenses paid event - called Marry Your Baby Daddy Day. She is looking for 10 couples who will tie the knot in an effort to halt a trend that, she claims, has 70% of black parents living outside wedlock. "Everybody in the African-American community knows a baby mama or a baby daddy," she said, using slang terms to refer to single parents. "It's almost become trendy in...
