Catholic League President Bill Donohue praised Thursday’s Supreme Court’s ruling in Fulton v. Philadelphia, calling it a “huge victory for religious liberty.” In its decision, the U.S. Supreme Court said that Catholic foster care agencies can reject gay couples when placing children for adoption. “This is a huge victory for religious liberty and a resounding defeat for LGBTQ activists,” Donohue said in his essay. The original case against Catholic foster care, in fact, did not stem from any complaints of discrimination but was the result of gay activists who “launched a contrived assault on the rights of Catholic social service...

The Supreme Court unanimously overturned a lower court ruling that allowed the City of Philadelphia to ban Catholic Social Services from participating in the city's foster care program, saying the city violated the organization's First Amendment rights.

Those looking for good news these days can find it in a March 23 Supreme Court decision recognizing that sometimes people really do take actions based on factors other than race. Even better, the court decision was unanimous. Great racial comity may result. In Comcast v. National Association of African American-Owned Media, all nine justices agreed that in a tort lawsuit alleging racial discrimination, the plaintiff must prove that the business decision in question was indeed motivated by — get this — actual racial discrimination. Amazingly, common sense prevails. Of course, for years, at least in contexts other than tort...

Louisiana’s aberrant take on the right to a jury trial in America will itself go on trial Monday, as the U.S. Supreme Court takes up a challenge to the non-unanimous verdict law that state voters just ditched, but only going forward. On the opening day of the court’s new term, the justices are set to take up the case of Evangelisto Ramos, an oil-supply boat worker who was convicted of second-degree murder in the killing of 43-year-old Trenice Fedison in New Orleans.

House Republicans called up Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf's tax-shifting plan on Monday, and the House shot it down by a unanimous vote. Minority Leader Frank Dermody, D-Oakmont, called the vote on an amendment that contained Wolf's tax plan “a political stunt.” “It does nothing to move this process forward,” Dermody said. “I would never ask (Democrats) to vote for a stunt.” Wolf denounced the vote as “gamesmanship” and said it was an effort to “‘see if we can embarrass the administration.'”

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday unanimously approved, 19 to 0, legislation granting Congress a voice in negotiations on the Iran nuclear accord, The New York Times reported. The legislation will now go to the full Senate, after President Barack Obama earlier withdrew his opposition rather than face a bipartisan rebuke. Republican opponents of the nuclear agreement on the committee sided with Obama’s strongest Democratic supporters in demanding a congressional role as international negotiators work to turn this month’s nuclear framework into a final deal by June 30. The bill would mandate that the administration send the text of...

LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said the decision to strike a deal with the Taliban for the release of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl was unanimous in the White House as it was believed that the soldier's life was "in peril". Bergdahl was handed over to U.S. special operations forces in Afghanistan on Saturday after five years in captivity in exchange for the transfer of five senior Taliban members from Guantanamo prison in Cuba to Qatar. It provoked criticism from some lawmakers in Congress who were angry that U.S. President Barack Obama's administration had not alerted them in advance,...

Today, the Supreme Court has sided with an Idaho couple in Sackett v. Just a point that I believe worth making. In Congress on July 4th, 1776 the vote to declare independence was 12 - 0. While some might call that unanimous, actually the delegates from the state of new york abstained. So there were no "No" votes, but the State of New York did not stand up and make it 13 -0, they were cowardly.

Court Upholds Campus Military Recruiting The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that colleges that accept federal money must allow military recruiters on campus, despite university objections to the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays.Justices rejected a free-speech challenge from law schools and their professors who claimed they should not be forced to associate with military recruiters or promote their campus appearances.Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the court, said that the campus visits are an effective military recruiting tool."A military recruiter's mere presence on campus does not violate a law school's right to associate, regardless of how repugnant...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the constitutionality of a federal law requiring state prisons to accommodate inmate religions. Justices unanimously sided with Ohio inmates, including a witch and a Satanist, who had claimed they were denied access to religious literature, ceremonial items and time to worship. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said the 2000 law, which was intended to protect the rights of prisoners, is not an unconstitutional government promotion of religion. "It confers no privileged status on any particular religious sect, and singles out no bona fide faith for disadvantageous treatment," Ginsburg wrote. The law requires...
