A teenage boy was arrested Sunday for assaulting a priest and a 69-year old woman who were praying outside a Ukiah church after finding satanic graffiti in the facility’s breezeway, Ukiah police said. The 16-year-old boy, who yelled satanic slurs during the Sunday attacks, could face a hate crime charge, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication, battery and elder abuse, police said. He was not identified because he is a juvenile. According to police, the incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Saint Mary of the Angels Catholic Church on Oak Street. The priest told police...

BOSTON — In 1990, Richard Abath was a 23-year-old self-described hippie and guitarist for a rock band named Ukiah who, while moonlighting as a security guard, allowed two thieves posing as police officers to enter the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum here. For 25 years, his decision to buzz in the men who carted away $500 million worth of art has been largely treated as the hapless act of a rookie watchman who fell for a bluff. But on Thursday, federal officials still investigating the art heist — the largest in American history — drew fresh attention to Mr. Abath’s actions...

OAKLAND — Convinced Jim Jones was God, Garrett Lambrev was the first person to join Peoples Temple in Ukiah in 1966 after the group moved from Indiana. Ten years later — two years before the Jonestown tragedy — he was part of a wave of defectors, shaken to the core by tales of torture and wanting nothing to do with a god who could sanction such things. He was reviled as a traitor and lived in fear for his life. Yet as Lambrev reflects on the enigma of Peoples Temple, his thoughts settle not just on the horrors of the...

UKIAH, Calif. (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Dan Hamburg was jailed after he attempted to deliver a letter about election irregularities to the Ohio secretary of state. Hamburg and his wife, Carrie, spent Wednesday night in a Columbus, Ohio, jail after they refused to leave a coffee shop in a building that houses the offices of Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell. The couple, who live near Ukiah, were released Thursday, said Hamburg, who served one term in Congress as a Democrat and later ran for governor of California as the Green Party candidate. The couple arrived in Columbus a week...
