The trio were among a group of six people attempting to scale part of Colchuck Peak when the lead climber triggered the snow slide, according to local authorities. Four climbers were swept about 500 feet down the steep mountain, sheriff officials said. The three who died were a 60-year-old New York woman, a 66-year-old man from New Jersey and a 53-year-old Connecticut man, the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office said. A 56-year-old man from New York sustained non-life threatening injuries and was able to get down to the base camp. Two other survivors weren’t hurt, the sheriff’s office said. [Chelan County...

America's deadliest tornado occurred on March 18, 1925. Tracking across three states, it killed at least 695 people. The tornado was later considered to be F5 strength, the top of the original Fujita Scale for tornado intensity. One or Many Tornadoes? In the era of the Tri-State Tornado, storm survey techniques were more primitive than today. With no aerial surveys and limited ground investigations, tornadoes were often assumed to remain on the ground the entire time. No radars or satellite data were available to help determine the most likely locations of any damage. The Illinois portion of the track was...

A week ago, I posted Early Observations on the Pandemic and Population Density, which suggested that the more worrying experience with the COVID-19 virus in the New York City metropolitan area could result from more intense person-to-person contacts: …the risk of infection is a function of being close to people who are infected. The most fundamental issue is thus, how close people are to one-another in their daily lives. The risk of infection can be expected to be higher where there are very high densities whether in residences, transport or employment locations. Jason Fox of Bloomberg, countered that weighted “metropolitan area”...

Hundreds of lives had been taken and thousands were injured or left homeless. With so many fatalities, so many injuries, so much destruction, and so many lives torn apart, it was now time to clean up the mess that nature had left behind. But this was much easier said than done—for it would take months to rebuild what had been demolished in less than 4 hours. Let’s take a brief look at what happened years ago, on that...

Just returned from the protest and after-protest hash and rehash.Attending: Doctor Raoul, firebrand, TFine80, davide, and Don (not a freeper). We stood outside the Broadway entrance from 4:45 to about 6:30, holding our signs and shouting our heads off: "Don't buy Newsweek," "Newsweek Lied, People Died," "Flush Newsweek," "Newsweek Lies to America," etc. The signs said pretty much the same, along with "There Are Lies, Damn Lies, and Homicidal 'Reporting,'" "Former Newsweek Reporter Will Lie for Food," and TFine80's sign, which said something like "And you wonder why they hate us!"Many people stopped to chat. There were the usual Manhattan liberals...

The protest rally against John Kerry went very, very well, thanks to the great organizational talents of the sponsors and the anti-Kerry enthusiasm of the Vietnamese-Americans.At 11:30, the entire block across from Kerry's headquarters, at 373 Park Avenue South, was already crowded with Vietnam Vets and many, many Vietnamese-Americans. Freepers were at first lost in the crowd but we eventually found one another. Here is the honor roll: NYC GOP Chick Davide Laserlock Tabi Katz Always Free (who came up from Baltimore and even took a NYC subway for the first time ever) hellinahandcart Coleus Cacique rmlew Doctor Raoul Clemenza...
