Tom Kean, Junior got a financial boost from Vice President Dick Cheney at a campaign fundraiser in Newark Monday night. Cheney's appearance was expected to raise about $400,000 for the Republican state senator, who is lagging slightly behind Corzine appointee Senator Robert Menendez in recent polls. Cheney told the donors Kean carries "one of the most trusted names in American politics." Kean missed the 15-minute address by the Vice President because of a state Senate voting session in Trenton. In the race to be New Jersey's next U.S. Senator, Republican state Senator Tom Kean Jr. now leads appointed Democratic Senator Robert Menendez 42% to 35%. Kean is son of a popular former governor. That's quite a change from our December 8 survey, conducted at the time Menendez was appointed. In that survey, Menendez led Kean 38% to 34%. Almost half of those then surveyed, 49%, reported having no opinion of either man.

Poll gives Kean 36% to Menendez's 25%, with 37% undecided.

No matter who his foe is next June— if he even has one— Kean will still be the prohibitive favorite. Especially if Forrester loses this November, Rider University political science professor David Rebovich said, Republican primary voters figure to be more pragmatic than usual in choosing a Senate nominee. "A lot of them will say, 'Hey, we need a win here. And if it means deviating from our standard playbook, then so be it,'" Rebovich said.

In a mock match-up with Menendez, Kean, the son of former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean, wins 43 percent versus 34 percent. Against Andrews, Kean captures 46 percent compared to the Democrat’s 36 percent.
