A British soldier who picked up and threw away a live grenade before it could kill him and his men is among 131 members of the Armed Forces whose heroics are being officially honoured. Serjeant Deacon Cutterham was wading through an irrigation ditch knee-deep in water on patrol in Helmand province, Afghanistan, when the grenade came flying over a high wall to one side and landed in front of him. He reached down to grab it and "posted" the grenade into a parallel irrigation channel to get it out of his hand as quickly as possible.

A vegetarian passenger aboard a Continental Airlines flight apparently was so disgusted by the meal she was served that she threw her tray at a flight attendant, the New York Post reports. "She said she was a vegetarian and she didn't like what she was being served," an airline official told the newspaper. "So she threw the food tray — and the food — at the attendant." The flight last Friday, which originated in the Dominican Republic, was bound for Newark Liberty International Airport. The woman reportedly had ordered a special meal but it was not vegetarian, the newspaper reported....

What a bunch of garbage! An elderly Manhattan woman living on Social Security was slapped with a $100 ticket -- just for throwing away a newspaper in a city trash can. Delia Gluckin, 80, tossed the paper in a bin right outside her Inwood apartment building Saturday morning, only to be ambushed by an overzealous Department of Sanitation agent wielding a handheld computertized ticket book. "I was walking to take the subway downtown and dropped it in a trash can, and this lady in a blue uniform ran up to me," Gluckin told The Post.

Police officers are being forced to make "ludicrous" arrests in an attempt to hit Home Office targets, it has been claimed. Ridiculous examples include the case of a Cheshire man who was cautioned for being "found in possession of an egg with intent to throw". In Kent, a child was arrested for throwing a slice of cucumber from a tuna sandwich at another youngster, while a was boy arrested for throwing a cream bun on a school bus.

INTERLAKEN, Switzerland (AP) - A 184-pound stone that has been tossed for a century in a Swiss celebration of folklore and national heritage has been stolen, authorities said Saturday. The "Unspunnenstein," named after the site of Switzerland's most revered stone-throwing contest, was stolen Saturday morning from a hotel in the central Swiss city of Interlaken where it was on display before the competition scheduled for Sept. 3-4, authorities said. The stone is one of country's most cherished cultural objects and recalls a gathering called two centuries ago to reassert Switzerland's identity in the chaos of Napoleon's Europe. While stone-throwing has...

Within seconds, two large men jumped him, pushed him down to the ground and punched him in the face repeatedly. A crowd quickly gathered, and women screamed for the beating to stop. Blood was visible on the young man's face and on the pavement. He was then led away by police.

Homeland security--Throwing money at technology As part of California's effort in the war on terror, state legislators this year proposed that trucks hauling hazardous materials be fitted with technologies that would allow authorities to seize control of hijacked vehicles--a law that supporters said should be passed "on an emergency basis." The bill, however, was voted down after critics contended that the communication signals used in the proposed system could be easily commandeered by the very people it was supposed to stop. "Satellite or cell phone links can be jammed by even a dull terrorist with a $20 device," said California...

Carnegie Mellon University robotics researchers, in conjunction with the US Marine Corps' Warfighting Laboratory, have developed a small, throwable, remote-controlled prototype robot designed for surveillance in urban settings. Several of the robots are being sent to Iraq for testing. The robot, known as Dragon Runner, has the ability to see around corners and deliver information to Marines while keeping them out of danger in urban settings where human access is impractical, dangerous or unsustainable. The Dragon Runner project is managed and funded by the Warfighting Laboratory, Quantico, Virginia, which is part of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command. The system...

In selecting gifts for my relatives, to my knowledge of which are all liberal to some degree (all the way from older RINO upper class types - i.e. who did not like Reagan, nor any other recent presidents besides Ford and the First Bush) to birkenstock-wearing manic-depressive postgraduates who seem to flirt with anarchy. I am a book lover and in giving books to these people I was very careful not to give them books on political topics. Pre-1900 American history seems to have been a good way to give a quality gift that they have seemed to appreciate. What...

David, the young shepherd-boy, killed the mighty warrior Goliath with a simple stone thrown from a sling.
