Newly arrived refugees have doubled the incidence of tuberculosis in Texas, Watchdog.org has learned. The Department of State Health Services said 1,238 refugees, asylum-seekers, Cuban parolees, human-trafficking victims and holders of special immigrant visas tested positive for TB. Texas typically reports 1,200 to 1,300 active TB cases annually, DSHS said. DSHS spokesman Chris Van Deusen said the positive screenings by refugees could indicate latent TB infections. “They have been exposed to TB and have the bacteria dormant in their body. It does not indicate that they are sick with tuberculosis and capable of spreading it,” Van Deusen said. But the...

WACO, Texas – Texas' highest criminal court reversed a gag order Wednesday in the case of one of the nearly 200 bikers arrested after a police-involved shooting last year outside a Waco restaurant that left nine dead. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals released the decision a year after a lawsuit was filed by Matthew Clendennen against the city of Waco, the local district attorney and the Waco police officer who drafted a warrant for his arrest. Clendennen, a landscape-lighting designer from nearby Hewitt, argued that the warrant lacked probable cause. The gag order, which was requested by prosecutors, barred...

A North Texas restaurant is adding some political flair to its burger menu this campaign season. Del Frisco’s Grille on Thursday unveiled burgers “honoring” Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Diners who order The Donald will get “well done prime beef patty with aged cheddar cheese, heirloom tomato and Bibb lettuce on a gold leaf bun, served with a side of teeny, tiny little pickles (wink, wink),” according to a PR firm that represents Del Frisco’s Grille.

He is currently in the Travis County Jail and charged with attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He has been placed under a $250,000 cash bond, meaning he must come up with the full amount to be released. In a press conference Thursday afternoon, Chief Acevedo said he believes Johnson is responsible for majority of the rock throwings over the last two years. Chief Acevedo said after many of the incidents, Johnson came back to the scene acting as a Good Samaritan and sometimes contacted media. There are 29 statewide elected offices in Texas. Republicans control 28 of them. And then there’s Lawrence E. Meyers, 68, the senior judge on the state’s highest criminal court and the sole Democrat. How did he do it? By defection. He was elected in 1992 as a Republican to the state Court of Criminal Appeals, and won re-election as a Republican in later elections. But he switched parties in 2013. Now, for the first time since crossing over, Judge Meyers is up for re-election as a Democrat in November. To call him an underdog is an understatement. The last time...

Texas' efforts to halt the arrival of Syrian refugees have been blocked by a federal judge, who rejected Republican leaders' claims that refugees pose an imminent risk or that states deserve a say in resettlements. The ruling comes days after presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump called to block non-citizen Muslims from entering the U.S. following the Orlando nightclub massacre. U.S. District Judge David Godbey, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, had previously knocked Texas for offering "largely speculative hearsay" about extremists possibly infiltrating Syrian refugees. His ruling, which was signed Wednesday, rejected arguments that the Obama administration...

Houston prosecutors have dropped one of two charges faced by pro-life investigator David Daleiden, stemming from his investigation of Planned Parenthood. County Court at Law Judge Diane Bull threw out a misdemeanor count of trafficking in human organs. “Judge Diane Bull’s swift dismissal of the bogus charge against CMP founder David Daleiden of trafficking human organs is the latest confirmation that the indictments from a runaway grand jury in Houston were a politically motivated sham all along,” the Center for Medical Progress said in a statement. “The dismissal of the first indictmen [on Monday] sends a strong message to Planned...
