WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. military will begin recruiting immigrants with special skills who are in the United States on temporary visas, offering a chance to become citizens in as little as six months, The New York Times reported. A report on the newspaper's website on Saturday said it would be the first time since the Vietnam War that the armed forces would be open to temporary immigrants, provided they have lived in the United States for at least two years. Immigrants with permanent resident status, or "green cards," are eligible to enlist in the U.S. military.

A citizen of India, Rajendrasinh B. Makwana attempted to sabotage the computer database at Fannie Mae. He was, according to news reports, employed as a so-called temporary foreign worker who had been authorized to work in the United States temporarily under the provisions of the H1B visa that had been issued to him. Here’s how this appalling situation can be summed up: This is the real threat to society, not the sinking of Fannie Mae. But the strange case of Makwana does bring up a number of issues. The main one is the use of H1B visa workers – and...

"Show me, O LORD, my life's end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life." Psalm 39:4 As a new year approaches, it's important for us to step back to take a broader look at our lives and see how we're doing. If you're like me, when you’re seeking to know God's specific will for your life ("what do you want me to do now, Lord?" would be one of those specific prayers in trying to discern His specific will), it's like we’re driving in a dense fog. You may have traveled down that...

NKorea says pact requires only "suspension" of nuclear facilities Other parties at six-nation talks in Beijing offered North Korea the equivalent of 1 mln tonnes of heavy fuel oil in connection with the "temporary suspension of the operation of its nuclear facilities," said the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). However, the text of the agreement reached earlier refers to the "disablement of all existing nuclear facilities" in return for the fuel aid and makes no reference to a temporary suspension.
  • Rumsfeld, Blum Support Temporary Guard Border Mission

WASHINGTON, May 17, 2006 – President Bush's proposal to temporarily boost the National Guard's contribution to U.S. border security stands as a testament to the Guard's flexibility but in no way signals a new, long-term Guard mission, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told Congress today. Under Bush's plan, announced May 15, up to 6,000 National Guard members will provide mobile communications, transportation, logistics, training, and construction support to the U.S. Border Patrol, the secretary said in testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee's defense subcommittee. Rumsfeld emphasized that the National Guard will not provide law enforcement support. "Military forces will not...

PLAQUEMINE PARISH, La. (NNS) -- Seabees of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 40 and local Plaquemines Parish residents teamed up in September to help the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) expedite establishing housing for hundreds of Hurricane Katrina evacuees. One of FEMA’s plans for relocating evacuees involved Plaquemines Parish landowners like Ray Tolar, who volunteered his land to host trailers for local families to stay in. In Tolar’s case, FEMA placed 19 trailers in his front yard, and Seabees are installing water, sewage and electrical connections for the trailers. “The faster and better we can install these lines,” said Construction...

Hello Fellow Freepers, I am posting this because forum is the biggest, most active place I can think of to help out a fellow Texan and the Katrina survivors at the same time. I posting this letter from fellow Texan Scott Chaffin, a gentleman who lives just up the way from on the rambling river known as "the Arms of God", El Brazos de Dios, who would like to utilize the resources he has at his "tiny bidness." He writes : Dear Sweet, Clean Texas Members of the TFG Blogroll, You might or might not know that I have a...

The purpose of FreeRepublic.com's multiple message boards is to limit the topics for each board to particular topics. Posting the same message on all the boards defeats the purpose of multiple-boards for special topics. It is very annoying to see the same message on every bulletin board. PLEASE! DO THE READERS A FAVOR. STOP CROSS-POSTING YOUR MESSAGES!

WASHINGTON - President Bush (news - web sites) made a fresh election-season appeal to Hispanics Thursday by trumpeting his proposal to give temporary legal status to illegal immigrants, an initiative that stalled after his administration did little to push it through Congress. Bush has only rarely mentioned the initiative since announcing it Jan. 7, and some lawmakers have accused him of neglecting it. The administration never provided Congress detailed guidance for legislation containing Bush's proposals, and bills that contained parts of them, some sponsored by Republicans, have not had hearings in the Republican-controlled Congress. A bill to create a guest...

This is not a goodbye opus - instead, this is a "I'll see you around but not as much" type of opus.As some of you read in a post earlier this month, I'm a new homeowner.  Part of becoming a new homeowner is, by necessity, living on a tighter budget.  Part of that budget, by necessity, is having to choose between an internet connection or having gasoline for the car.  As much as I like being able to connect to the internet, I like being able to drive to work even more.  So, I'll be foregoing an internet connection for...

Iraq weather respite may only be temporary 16:35 26 March 03 NewScientist.com news service The fierce sandstorms and torrential rain that have hampered the invading US and UK military forces in Iraq improved on Wednesday. However, such weather is common at this time of year and is liable to play a continuing role in the progress of the war. Furthermore, the available weather forecasts suggest winds are likely to pick up again on Friday, threatening to once more ground aircraft and slow the advance of the coalition's ground forces. Winds of over 50 miles per hour whipped up sandstorms on...
