FORT HUACHUCA — For decades, the large, helium-filled aerostat has floated silently against the horizon above Sierra Vista, time enough for both long-time residents and new arrivals to possibly lose sight of the skyborne equipment’s mission as an important link a chain of detection spanning the entire international border. The Tethered Aerostat Radar System, or TARS, traces its origins back to the 70s and 80s, when traditional, ground fixed radar systems were being evaded by the newly airborne efforts of South American drug cartels.

Could TARS From ‘Interstellar’ Actually Exist? We Asked Science A robotics expert breaks down TARS. by Shaunna Murphy 15 hours ago Apologies to Matthew McConaughey, but the real, breakout star of “Interstellar” was clearly TARS the sarcastic space robot (voiced by Bill Irwin). A former marine companion bot with angular limbs and acerbic wit, director Christopher Nolan somehow made TARS (and his sister robot, CASE) one of the most fully-formed, anthropomorphized robots in film history — without even giving him a face. “I wanted a more realistic approach to what a robot would be,” Nolan told the Associated Press. “I...

As the U.S. government continues to expand surveillance and monitoring systems to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars within the borders of the United States, a recent announcement regarding the country’s southern air defense systems is raising eyebrows. Our southern border is, in part, protected by the Tethered Aerostat Radar System (TARS), which utilizes moored balloons hovering at about 15,000 feet to identify low flying aircraft and missiles that may penetrate the border and cross into U.S. airspace. The system is utilized by the U.S. Air Force, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), and U.S. Customs and Border...

Obama tars Clinton with the Bush brush By Toby Harnden in Washington Last Updated: 12:54AM BST 05/05/2008 Barack Obama, struggling to contain a surging Hillary Clinton, has hit back against his dogged Democratic rival by branding her as just a President George W. Bush clone for threatening to "totally obliterate" Iran. Barack Obama talks to residents as he campaigns in Indiana "It's not the language that we need right now, and I think it's language that's reflective of George Bush," he said on NBC television. "We have had a foreign policy of bluster and sabre-rattling and tough talk, and in...

3/28/2006 - BALAD AIR BASE, Iraq (AFPN) -- A little-known capability here is paying big dividends for warfighters on the ground. Air National Guard F-16 Fighting Falcons from the 332nd Expeditionary Fighter Squadron are using the Theater Airborne Reconnaissance System, or TARS pod, to provide high-quality still imagery to ground commanders to help them achieve their tactical objectives. The TARS pod, mounted on the centerline of the F-16, contains a sophisticated photographic system that records high-resolution images which can be exploited by users on the ground within hours of landing. Because the pod is mounted on the centerline, the aircraft...

Is there a website that exists for "young Republican"? I live in Shorewood, Wisconsin. My neighborhood is strongly liberal and democratic. I have six kids. My middle son (12), is very interested in politics. I have shared many articles from this website with him. He would love to be able to communicate with teens who share the Republican point of view. Most of his classmates are Democrats and hate GW. Any advise on where to send him?????

Hippie march sparks counter protest (East Moriches, NY) At 4:00 PM, two small political groups collided when members marching from various anti-war organizations marched passed two 17-year-old members of the Westhampton Teenage Republicans (http://WesthamptonTars.8m.com) who had flags and a sign of their own. The anti-war groups confronted the teenage republicans after they were spotted across the street along their marching route. At first mistaken as fellow anti-war protesters, they were invited to march with the group. Then, the group's leader realized that the two teens were in fact on the other side and supporting our troops. After a lengthy debate,...
