In the remarkable race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, it now appears to be a three-way contest among embattled frontrunner Herman Cain, one-time favorite Mitt Romney, and the surging Newt Gingrich. Poll Position’s national scientific survey of Americans saying they plan to vote in the 2012 Republican primary or caucus was conducted Tuesday night as Cain found himself embroiled in a growing controversy over sexual allegations made against him by four women – allegations Cain emphatically denies as baseless. The poll found   24% backing Cain, (actually 24.4%)   20% Romney,       (actually 19.5%)   19% Gingrich,...

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich draws 14% support, with no other GOP contender reaching double-digits. Thirteen percent (13%) of GOP voters are undecided at this time. Two things worth noting, and then I’ll let the results speak for themselves. First, the top five candidates from the last survey are again the top five candidates in this survey, and in exactly the same order. Herman Cain again takes the top spot, followed by Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul. Second, Cain is the first candidate to cross the 50% mark in a survey, at 50.97%. This includes surveys where Sarah Palin was included. In fact, the only candidate to come close to 50% was Perry, who hit 48.29% in September.

Our new national poll finds Herman Cain is the breakaway frontrunner for the 2012 Republican nomination despite the fresh disclosure that he faced sexual harassment in the 1990s. More Republicans and independents than ever say they want Herman Cain to win the Republican nomination. Our national scientific poll was conducted last night, two days after the Cain controversy erupted and one day after Cain emphatically denied ever committing sexual harassment. Among Republicans, Cain tops his next closest challenger, Mitt Romney, 33%-18%. They were followed by Newt Gingrich at 17% and Rick Perry at 12%. Independents favored Cain over Romney 30%-11%,...
