It's boxy, bland, and relentlessly practical, but in an age of diminished wealth and high unemployment, maybe that combination doesn't sound so bad. Despite those qualities, or because of them, the minivan is making a comeback. Sales are up, new models are appearing, and the woman who once did the blog "Rage Against the Minivan" has fallen in love with one. "In marketing campaigns featuring heavy-metal theme songs, rapping parents, secret agents in cat masks, pyrotechnics and even Godzilla, minivan makers are trying to recast the much-ridiculed mom-mobile as something that parents can be proud—or at least unashamed—of driving," reports...

SUVs lead U.S. auto sales growth despite efforts to improve fuel efficiencyBy Peter Whoriskey Washington Post Staff Writer Wednesday, December 29, 2010; 10:01 PM If U.S. consumers are in the midst of a green revolution, the news hasn't reached car buyers. With the end of the recession, bigger vehicles have made a comeback, sales figures show, and it has come at the expense of smaller, more-efficient cars. Leading the growth were sales of midsize sport-utility vehicles, which jumped 41 percent through the first 11 months of the year, led by vehicles such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Honda...

Iceland, after making a big push toward hydrogen-powered cars just a few years ago, is now turning its focus to electric vehicles (EVs), and an Ohio company is a big beneficiary of the shift. AMP Holdings, based in suburban Cincinnati, has announced a five-year deal to sell 1,000 of its SUV electric conversions to Northern Lights Energy (NLE) of Reykjavik. As AMP CEO Steve Burns explained in a press release, Iceland, with its vast geothermal resources, is perfect for EVs. “Everything is present — a low cost of electricity coupled with the high cost of gasoline, the inherent short commutes...

But now the Washington Examiner reports that Rick spent $40,000 on a super-posh event in Colorado ski country, around the same time Boucher became the floor manager for an important telecommunications bill. Of course, it's a complete coincidence that Boucher's PAC raised 5 times more money than it ever had from companies like Dish Network, DirecTV, Comcast, GoDaddy, T-Mobile and AT&T - all firms that have a vested interest in legislation before Boucher's subcommittee.

CROOKSTON, Minn. — A moose is dead after being struck by two sports utility vehicles in northwestern Minnesota. The State Patrol says an SUV pulling a boat hit the moose "square on" shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday east of Crookston. The SUV rolled in the ditch, and the moose came to rest in the northbound lane. The moose was then hit by a second SUV, which also went off the road. The Crookston Daily Times reports both drivers and their passengers were wearing seat belts and apparently were not hurt. The patrol says the moose was killed when it was...

Surprises ruled the day at the National Clean Energy Summit, held September 7 in Las Vegas. The Summit, coordinated by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and the leftist advocacy group Center for American Progress, featured surprise appearances by SUVs, environmental protesters, praise for hydropower, and a dreary, steady rain as speaker after speaker sang the praises of solar power.

As Ford takes the wraps off the new 2011 Explorer today – with a stellar, multi-city “throwback” reveal combined with a social media offensive – it’s easy to see why they’re excited about it. The new Explorer is lighter, much better looking, safer, quieter, exhaustively equipped, technically sophisticated, dramatically more efficient and with light-years better driving dynamics thrown-in for good measure. In short, there is nothing about the 2011 version of the Explorer that bears any resemblance to the vehicle that came before it. The only thing the new vehicle shares with the old one is the name, which has...

[Scroll down 1/2 page to article]...If the configuration of the propane gas cylinders and gasoline containers in the back of a SUV sounds familiar, it should. In an article that was published on this web site on 29 June 2007, we warned that the operational tactics of Islamic terrorists of the London attempted bombings outside of a night club would be used on U.S. soil, and identified the crowded streets of New York as a prime target.

An Homage to Hummer Comedian Penn Jillette laments the passing of the 'big, stupid' vehicle By PENN JILLETTE There's a feeling one gets when one sits behind the wheel of a really big stupid military-lite American Hummer. You have that feeling of being strong and safe, high on your pleather throne, above the fray, above the danger, not having to listen to anyone or anything, the rumble of a too-big motor giving you a wiggle and jiggle and tickle inside you. You have the power to run over anyone else on the road, if they dare monkey with you and...

April 3, 2010 Barack Obama Aims To Drive Gas Guzzlers Off The Road With Greener Laws Giles Whittell, Washington For decades they have thundered along America’s highways and choked up parking lots, a symbol of extravagance unchallenged by politicians, emissions standards or common sense. They are the four-wheel-drive behemoths known to the US Government as “light trucks” and to consumers as SUVs (sport utility vehicles) — but their easy ride as the world’s most conspicuous mobile polluters ended this week. In a coup that achieves something President Clinton promised but never delivered, President Obama has forced the big three US...

It's a big name for a big truck... deservedly celebrating its impressive lineage. Chevrolet rolled out the 2010 Suburban 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition model at the Chicago Auto Show specially commemorating 75 years of family hauling (making it the longest running nameplate in the industry). The decked-out SUV, limited to just 2,570 units (apparently, GM is limited by the amount of White Diamond paint it can procure), is identified by its White Diamond Tricoat exterior paint and Cashmere interior.
