The State Department’s independent watchdog has issued a highly critical analysis of Hillary Clinton’s email practices while running the department, concluding that she failed to seek legal approval for her use of a private email server and that department staff would not have given its blessing because of the “security risks in doing so.” The inspector general, in a long awaited review obtained Wednesday by The Washington Post in advance of its publication, found that Clinton’s use of private email for public business was “not an appropriate method” of preserving documents and that her practices failed to comply with department...

The inspectors general for the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Intelligence Community issued a joint written statement late Friday afternoon asserting that emails that Hillary Clinton had on her personal email account while she was Secretary of State, and that she kept on a personal server after she left the government, “contained classified information when they were generated,” “remain classified today” and “should never have been transmitted via an unclassified personal system.” This joint statement the two inspectors general issued late Friday contradicts what former Secretary Clinton said about the emails on Saturday. So far, the inspector general for...

A State Department watchdog has begun an inquiry into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s email setup, following calls from Republicans about the private email address and server used exclusively by the former secretary during her tenure at Foggy Bottom, The Hill has confirmed. The State Department’s inspector general received a letter from the Republican National Committee only a few days after a New York Times report detailed Clinton’s exclusive use of a private server at her home. John Phillippe, the RNC’s general counsel, urged the watchdog “to conduct an investigation into whether Secretary Clinton violated Department of State policies...

Secretary of State John Kerry sent a letter to the State Department’s Inspector General requesting a review of email and records management, the State Department said today. The timing of Kerry’s request has many asking if this push for reform is connected to former Secretary Hillary Clinton’s recent scandal involving her use of a private email server, rather than a State Department account. State Department Spokesman Jeff Rathke denied this had anything to do with Clinton, citing instead the State Department’s need to better manage the overwhelming number of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and requests for information from...

State Department employees did not receive proper training and guidance on rules requiring the preservation of emails for the official record, according to the department's inspector general. In a report released Wednesday, the inspector general found that of the one billion emails sent in 2011, only 61,156 were preserved. That number dropped to 41,749 in 2013. The report, conducted in early 2014, found that some employees do not retain emails because "they do not want to make the email available in searches or fear that this availability would inhibit debate about pending decisions," according to the report. The inspector general...

Earlier this week, Texas senator Ted Cruz pledged to block State Department nominees until the federal agency filled the vacant inspector general position. Almost two days later, the State Department nominated Steve Linick for the position, which has been vacant for nearly 2,000 days. (please see link for full article)
