So much for taking America’s “fake news” problem seriously. Ever since Donald Trump was elected president, there’s been an abundance of hand-wringing over the “fake news” that supposedly is rampant on social media. Yet missing has been any kind of serious searching among the mainstream media about whether it could learn any lessons from this election—and whether reporters and editors are holding themselves accountable to their supposed values of objectivity and rigorous reporting. Good grief: A new report from the Southern Poverty Law Center showed children have been negatively impacted by the election, with kids' classroom climate suffering drastically. The Monday report, which surveyed 10,000 teachers across the U.S., found many students were experiencing higher anxiety and there were more reported cases of "verbal harassment, the use of slurs and derogatory language, and disturbing incidents involving swastikas, Nazi salutes and Confederate flags." Civil rights groups called for President-elect Donald Trump to forcefully and publicly denounce racism and bigotry, pointing to more than 860 bias-related incidents recorded in the 10 days following his Nov. 8 victory. In the first days after the 2016 presidential election, the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance project administered an online survey to K–12 educators from across the country. Over 10,000 teachers, counselors, administrators and others who work in schools have responded. The survey data indicate that the results of the election are having a profoundly negative impact on schools and students. Ninety percent of educators report that school climate has been negatively affected, and most of them believe it will have a long-lasting impact. To combat an alarming surge in racism, hate and bullying in the schools post-election, California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom called on local and county superintendents to act immediately to establish a zero-tolerance policy for hate in the schools and create a clearinghouse to report such incidents statewide. The Southern Poverty Law Center has tracked reported hate crime and racist incidents statewide and nationwide from Nov. 9 to Nov. 16. During that period California had more than 80 reported incidents, the most overall of any state in the country, Newsom said.

Ryan Lenz, a senior writer for the Southern Poverty Law Center, suggested that Donald Trump’s “Drain the Swamp” slogan has racist connotations in an appearance Tuesday on CNN. Host John Berman interviewed Lenz following a segment covering a conference held in Washington, D.C. over the weekend of a so-called alt-right group that supports white nationalist and Neo-Nazi views.
