You would think Hempstead Middle school principal Amy Lacey was asking to see the “papers” of the 50% Hispanic students at her school as this story is now getting national attention. But all she did was announce that students can not speak Spanish while in class to avoid disruption. The students make it sound like horrible discrimination and apparently the school district agrees. She has been placed on paid administrative leave and the school district is bending over backwards to apologize for the principal’s actions. But some residents of Hempstead (outside of Houston) agree with the principal according to KHOU11:

Add one more delay to the list for the rollout of President Barack Obama's health care law. This time, it's a postponement of the launch of online enrollment tools in Spanish. Hispanics are viewed as one of keys to the success of Obama's coverage expansion. Their relative youthfulness is seen as a plus for the law's new markets. They are heavily represented in major states that the administration is targeting for enrollments and they're overwhelmingly likely to qualify for tax credits that would help make premiums more affordable.

Nearly 60 percent of the state-run exchanges offer consumers only an English version of their Affordable Care Act website. The states without Spanish language exchange sites are Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington. Verizon executives in Tampa Bay are informally telling employees that they should be speaking English only when on the job. Not because Verizon has an English-only policy at work — it doesn’t — but because speaking Spanish at work when not absolutely necessary can make nearby English-only speakers feel excluded.
