The American Civil Liberties Union and the Council on American-Islamic Relations filed an appellate brief today with the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, asking that the court invalidate Oklahoma’s constitutional amendment last year, which barred courts in the state from using or citing Shariah law.

A devout Muslim tracked his step-daughter over four states to murder her for bringing dishonour on her family, according to police. Rahim Alfetlawi, 45, followed 20-year-old Jessica Mokdad to her grandmother’s home in Warren, Michigan, and shot his step-daughter in the head. Alfetlawi gave himself in to police, claiming the gun went off by accident when he pulled it out. Alfetlawi reportedly became enraged when Miss Mokdad stopped wearing the traditional Muslim headscarf.

Subhi Othman, who admitted to stabbing his daughter to death in November last year, was sentenced Monday to 18 years in prison by the district court in Nyköping, south of Stockholm. When police arrived on the scene, they found his daughter lying in the foetal position at the bottom of the stairs. She had been stabbed 53 times. During questioning, Othman claimed he saw no other solution as his daughter was leading what he viewed as an ‘indecent’ lifestyle. The court found that the murder had been premeditated and especially brutal.
