The death toll of multiple U.S. drone strikes launched on Sunday against training camps of al- Qaida militants in Yemen's southern provinces of Abyan and Shabwa has risen to 55, the Yemeni Interior Ministry said on Monday. Three local leaders were among the 55 dead militants, the ministry said in a brief statement on its website. It said that its security services are working to identify the nationalities of foreign fighters who were killed among al-Qaida militants in the airstrikes. A drone strike in Yemen killed at least 15 people on Saturday, including 12 suspected al Qaeda militants, three Yemeni Defense Ministry officials told CNN.

At least 30 people were killed when suspected militants launched simultaneous attacks on military targets in southern Yemen, sources say. Two car bombs reportedly exploded at a camp in Shabwa province, killing around 20 soldiers and wounding many others. In a second assault in the area, gunmen also shot 10 soldiers in the town of Maifaa. The government is battling al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) militants who often target the military.

An American drone strike in southern Yemen has killed seven al-Qaida-linked militants, including the media chief for the group's Yemeni branch, Egyptian-born Ibrahim al-Bana.
