Far more U.S. teens than previously thought are transgender or identify themselves using other nontraditional gender terms, with many rejecting the idea that girl and boy are the only options, new research suggests. The study looked at students in ninth and 11th grade and estimated that nearly 3 percent are transgender or gender nonconforming, meaning they don't always self-identify as the sex they were assigned at birth. [Snip] The study is an analysis of a 2016 statewide survey of almost 81,000 Minnesota teens. Nearly 2,200 identified as transgender or gender nonconforming. The study found that these kids reported worse mental...

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Latest on Nevada becoming the fifth state in the U.S. with stores selling marijuana for recreational purposes (all times local): Minnesota resident Edgar Rosas Lorenzo on Saturday flew with his family to Sin City for a wedding. But even before he checked in to his hotel, he stopped at a pot dispensary on the Las Vegas Strip. The 21-year-old says he learned of the legalization of recreational marijuana in Nevada while he was at the airport waiting for his flight to depart. He waited in line about 40 minutes before he could buy one-eighth of...

The first thing you'd probably ask Lisa Marteau is: Why would people want to hang from hooks pierced through their skin? The reasons are different for each person who participates in this activity known as body suspension, and the Boulder woman is careful not to make generalizations. She tiptoes around her words. She does not want to misrepresent the community — to further distort society's misconceptions and opinions about this unusual hobby.

Rosie O’Donnell used to break her own limbs with either a baseball bat or a wooden hanger when she was a child. This revelation, as well as many about her experiences on "The View" last year, is contained in a new book she’s written due shortly called “Celebrity Detox.” This personal memory, so shocking, is almost thrown toward the end of what is better described as a long essay than a short memoir. [snip] She broke her own bones, she recalls, “my hands and fingers usually. No one knew. It was a secret.” She used a Mets baseball bat she...

Thanks to the horrendous treatment they suffer at the hands of brutal jailers at Fidel Castro’s prisons, some prisoners in Cuba are resorting to extreme forms of protest -- including self-mutilation -- as a means to attract international attention to their plight.According to Miami’s El Nuevo Herald newspaper, protests have included: A lawyer and independent journalist imprisoned for two years carved the letters "I" and "L" into his forehead, proclaiming that he was "inocente," or "innocent," and demanding "libertad," or "liberty." According to the newspaper, one the cuts became badly infected. Prior to these acts of self-mutilation, El Nuevo reported...

Forget the "No Spin Zone"--this battle's turning into Hardball. The producer who launched a sensational $60 million sexual harassment lawsuit against Bill O'Reilly and Fox News Channel has filed new charges against the talk-show host and the network, alleging they conspired to fire her "in direct retaliation" for speaking out about his supposed bad behavior. In an amended complaint filed Tuesday in Manhattan Supreme Court, 33-year-old Andrea Mackris says she alerted Fox News by Sept. 29 about alleged sexual harassment by O'Reilly while working as an associate producer on his top-rated show, The O'Reilly Factor. Mackris originally contended the 55-year-old...

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- In the opening statements of a Fort Lauderdale murder trial, one lawyer told jurors to be ready for the "bizarre, flamboyant and unusual." The trial is for two men, one who looks like a woman, both accused of killing a woman at a "pumping party" where they injected silicone to enlarge her buttocks. Mark Hawkins and Donnie Hendricks, who prefers to use the name "Viva," are accused practicing medicine without a license, and of injecting so much silicone into Vera Lawrence (pictured, left) that it caused her death. The pair is alleged to have injected 12,000...

From "Solitary Sex"/Zone Books The dangers of self-abuse: An illustration from "The Sexual System and Its Derangements," a popular medical book published in Buffalo in 1875. Thomas W. Laqueur is a scholarly gumshoe with a specialty in sex. His last book, "Making Sex: Body and Gender From the Greeks to Freud" (1990), was a highly original investigation of a tantalizing mystery he had stumbled on in the archives: Why did female orgasm, long considered essential to conception, all but disappear from the historical record during the Enlightenment? Now, in "Solitary Sex: A Cultural History of Masturbation," Mr. Laqueur, a professor...

Phony Faith-Based Initiative Worldnetdaily By Joseph Farah January 17, 2003 I told you so. I warned you. I explained right from the start what President Bush's so-called "Faith-Based Initiative" was all about – a scam to score political points that would further marginalize faith in the public square, empower bureaucrats and compromise churches and synagogues who cooperate with it. Many of you thought I was being an alarmist. Many of you thought I was over the top. Many of you told me to give the new administration a break and the benefit of the doubt. Well, the proof is in....

A Nation of Frogs William W. BorstMindszenty Report | January 2003 Just recently, I was discussing the tax system with my attorney who had just completed my mother's estate. When I informed him of the Marxist underpinnings of, not only the so-called "death tax," but also the graduated income tax, he was shocked. He had no idea that Karl Marx had wriuen the major elements in the tax code with which he had been working his entire professional life. All one has to do is read the Communist Manifesto, written by Karl Marx and Frederick Engels in 1848. The...

I think we can make posting much easier and enjoyable if people would better back up their posts with keywords. For example, if you post an article on President Bush, add a keyword called "President Bush". This would make a simple search for posts much easier when considering if a certain topic has already been posted, and give the moderators a little more free time :)
